@rysiek you seem to be a bit of a Mastodon ninja. Can you help me find a new server that does not plan to federate with Threads? Where I am now: EU-based, interested in climate, lots of European languages (German, Dutch, French, Spanish...) I pay a little every month. Huge thanks!

@alberto_cottica hah, well, I am honoured!

I think this is the place to start:
https://fedipact.veganism.social/

I can't say I am an expert in specific instances and communities. Might make sense to ask more broadly.

@rysiek thanks man!

@alberto_cottica sure thing. I'm here if you want to talk specific instances. I might need to ask around first, though, so the more specific you can get with your preferences, the better.

One instance I think you might want to consider is Merveilles:
https://merveilles.town/about

I don't believe I have ever had a bad interaction with an account there, and some wonderful people are behind it.

@IcooIey not sure you can see @rysiek 's reply. I was not able to mention you in the same thread. Anyway, he suggests looking here: https://fedipact.veganism.social/. Your thoughts?

@IcooIey @alberto_cottica if you are generally happy with your current instance, one way to go about it (and my current approach, as my home instance is apparently federating with Threads) is to manually ban the threads[.]net domain:
    https://privacy.thenexus.today/how-to-block-threads-on-mastodon/

That's probably Good Enough for a lot of cases, maybe worth considering as an option as well.

@rysiek @alberto_cottica yes, I’ve done this. But I found there is leakage depending on what mobile app I use to access my account. I’ve still seen threads posts, and was told blocking an instance from an account works similarly to muting, not like blocking by an instance. My posts may still be visible; I still may see threads posts.

@IcooIey that article goes pretty in-depth into that, and also links to an even more in-depth piece.

But yeah, if you want to be 100% sure, switch to a FediPact instance.

@rysiek @IcooIey I am already blocking Threads. This is more about business models: I would like to be part of a community that is funding its own social media, so the social media in question have no incentive to go all surveillance capitalism. I'm done with "building my community in the Torment Nexus".

It's a difficult call, because my current instance already works like that. But I worry that in the medium run Mastodon will get bled out.

@alberto_cottica @IcooIey yeah, that makes total sense of course. Then you probably want one of the instances that either block Threads or are explicitly part of the FediPact.

Merveilles dot Town is part of the FediPact, for example, and is a wonderful instance from what I can see by people from there I had interacted with.
