Biden, who was in NYC for a campaign event, is taking an unusual route to Camp David this weekend according to the official schedule: Marine One helicopter from Manhattan to JFK, Air Force One (747) to Andrews, where he change planes to a different (probably 757) Air Force One to Hagerstown.

Usually they take Marine One from DC directly to Camp David. Unclear why they couldn't fly a smaller AF1 directly from JFK to Hagerstown. (I think Marine One lacks range to get from NYC to Camp David)

I find it vaguely comforting that even presidents can't always get nonstop flights.

Air Force One getting a good view of the Key Bridge site on the way to Andrews.

Key Bridge workers / recovery personnel getting a good view of Air Force One 😎

And before you scold me: where Air Force One is located is not a secret. The press corps is generally on the plane. It has a transponder broadcasting its position several times a minute. The president’s daily schedule is published in advance. Chill out.

@mattblaze I'm pretty sure anyone trying to mess with Air Force One is going to find the Secret Service folks on the ground meek and understanding; ditto for the F-16 fighter escort while it's in the air.

And the new AF1, a smaller 757, is now en route to Hagerstown.

@mattblaze

^new^ is relative! (20)'09 tail prefix on the C32A's is indeed newer that (19)'92 on the VC25A (^soon^ to be replaced by VC25B—delivery pushed back from 2024 to 2027— which is what i initially assumed you meant by "new AF1" until i checked the tail and type on the screencap of the spare / alternate repositioning.)

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@n1vux new, as in 30 minutes earlier a different plane was AF1.

@mattblaze
Ohh, i see now.
POTUS changed to the smaller planes at JBA, because going to smaller airport next (fewer camp-followers may be a feature)

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@n1vux yes, see the first post in the thread.

@mattblaze
i did, i just mis-read the 2d map and mis-read operational intent (knowing that one of the smaller SAM planes usually shadows big AF1, but Baltimore is close enough they probably didn't bother in this case, silly me.)

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@n1vux the shadow plane is almost always the same kind, and parks at an alternate nearby airport.

@mattblaze I think it (the helo) has the range, but it's slower and louder and generally more uncomfortable.

Are they still using Ospreys for DC->DE flights, or did somebody decide they were too dangerous? they certainly have the range.

What I don't understand is why they didn't just preposition the 757 at JFK.

mattblaze,
@mattblaze@federate.social avatar

@mikej right; that would be the obvious thing to do. Unclear why they’re going back to Andrews at all. Maybe picking up guests?

All the flights I’ve seen to DE recently have been 757s.

Anyway, the 747 AF1 is just south of Trenton right now on its way to Andrews if you want to look up.
