Oh yes quite authentic, but use of a regionalism in public is still a choice.
Which for this post was a good and appropriate choice.👍❤

I did NOT expect that it would be explicitly choosing a non-MUTCD shape because it's not a warning etc. Nice and thank you all for this.❤

Government = Abbreviate Everything.

Over on the Blue FB, there's a
public group "there is NO way that is MUTCD-compliant" that shares non-standard signage found in the wild. Hilarity.

Well, my smartphone just screamed at me. It informed me that at 5:00 EST the army Corp of engineers will be using explosive cutting charges to slice up the part of the collapsed Francis Key Bridge which is currently draped over the cargo ship.

They said anybody within 2,000 feet should either wear hearing protection or hide inside a house.

I will comply...

Ended up going to Florida and back for a graduation (with a brief stop at Epcot since we were there).

Epcot when we were kids: A taste of culture! Innovation! Live street performers! Music! Food! THE FUTURE!

Epcot today: Day Drinker's Paradise (with Official "Drinking Around The World" T-Shirts).

I learned to develop film out of necessity.

Dev and scan for 7 rolls of film is US$150 where I live.

With my Bellini chemicals, and scanning setup at Photolaundry where I get a Fuji frontier scanner by the hour, it costs $4-5 per roll (excluding my time, but I actually do this to destress)

n1vux,
@n1vux@mastodon.radio avatar

Photolaundry sounds sweet!

I should check if one of the Greater Boston makerspaces has hourly high-end scanners before I pay to upgrade.

(I'm not currently shooting film, but I have 3 lifetimes of slides to digitize.)

Saw "The Beekeeper" with Jason Statham. There could not be a more awesome movie!

  1. Beekeeping!
  2. Old pickup truck!
  3. Woodworking tools!
  4. Anti-crypto/NFT
  5. Plot could have come from a drunk version of my beekeeping toots about replacing a queen
  6. Cybercriminals get their just desserts
  7. Hero is a nice guy
  8. Beekeeper as the hero

(It brought tears to my eyes, truly).

In an era when U.S. television series still showed married couples sleeping in separate beds, typically separated by a table of some sort, the first two series to clearly break this pattern and show the couples sharing beds were the 1960's programs "Bewitched" and "The Munsters" -- both series with supernatural elements. I've always found this fascinating.

n1vux,
@n1vux@mastodon.radio avatar

@lauren

iirc, I Love Lucy (1950s; already in syndicated reruns in 1960s) was given a pass on single shared bed by the censors because both the actors and the characters were married to each other. (Provided the pajamas and on-screen (in)action were suitably chaste, naturally.)

«Understood» is doing some heavy lifting there, to leave a loophole for FTL under the rug.

But yes, the analogies from Old Earth colonial/piratical/megacorp eras' economics lift about as well into space as WW1/WW2 dog-fights & submarine vs destroyer chases (i.e. badly).

@sudnadja
My late M-i-L dismissed her husband's cherished (hard) SF and the 1960s/70s TV/movies as "apparently spaceships don't have toilets".
She had a point.
I've since seen a couple women SF authors include "freshers" for functions beyond shower-replacement as plot points, but not in Golden Age novels.
(I suspect JWCampbell had an aversion to the scatological and set the tone?)

@RogerBW @michael_w_busch @nyrath

n1vux,
@n1vux@mastodon.radio avatar

She might have coined the term?
But AFAIK it was rather later that freshers providing nutrient-laden-excrement to the hydroponics was spelled out.
