Mh.. Hetzner is really hosting the AFD website :neocat_googly_shocked:

parkellipsen,
@parkellipsen@ohai.social avatar

@tfunken any recommendable alternatives for all the people out there?

tfunken,
@tfunken@lyratris.com avatar

@parkellipsen If you want a totally honest recommendation, try to pick smaller providers and maybe not use what everyone else is using.

Even when we ignore the fact that they are kinda supporting the afd, its overall healthier for the internet and also for the fediverse if services more decentral.
Also, if one provider gets too big its crushing all the other smaller providers.
Its just impossible to match the price Hetzner is offering unless you are damn huge. (Hetzner is running 23 own Datacenters in Europe)

So, if it is in your budget please consider supporting a smaller provider.

Well, enough about that :neocat_laugh_nervous:
Some recommendations I have so far.

Small & Community Providers
(Usually more expensive but run by smaller companies or non-profits)

IN-Berlin
Location: Berlin, DE
Products: VPS, Colocation
URL: https://www.in-berlin.de

Run by a Association (Verein). Afaik some of them are CCC friends.
Is for example used by codeberg.org

Glauca Digital
Location: Leeds, UK
Products: VPS, Colocation
URL: https://glauca.digital

Run by fellow fedi citizens like @q
LGBTQ+ friendly and they have shorks :blobhaj_trans_heart:
Also offers managed hosting :neocat:

1984
Location: Reykjavík, IS
Products: VPS
URL: https://1984.hosting

Strong focus on privacy.

Mythic Beasts
Location: UK, US, NL
Products: VPS, Dedicated Servers, Colocation
URL: https://www.mythic-beasts.com

Nice people and also active on fedi @beasts
Afaik they also do managed mastodon hosting.

Aurologic
Location: Frankfurt, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server, Colocation
URL: https://aurologic.com

Kinda expensive, but solid quality and a nice and helpful support.

Meerfarbig
Location: Frankfurt, DE
Products: Dedicated Server, Colocation
URL: https://meerfarbig.net

Also kinda expensive, but really solid quality and a nice and helpful support.

CommunityRack
Location: Zurich, CH
Products: Colocation
URL: https://communityrack.org

Less a provider and more a Association (Verein) which runs a couple of racks together.
Afaik requires you to become a member to participate.

Cheap & Lowend Providers
(Cheapish providers, includes bigger providers)

Active Servers
Location: Frankfurt, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server, Colocation
URL: https://active-servers.com

Probably the best of all the cheap providers.
Support is okay, network is good and the dedicated servers are reasonable priced.

Netcup
Location: Vienna, AT & Nuernberg, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server
URL: https://www.netcup.eu

They offer really cheap arm VPS.
But last time I've tested them they seem to oversell their system a bit.

Webtropia
Location: Dusseldorf, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server, Colocation
URL: https://www.webtropia.com

Guess they kinda try to target the market segment of Hetzner.
Servers are okay, network is good support is.. okayish..
They also run something like the Server Börse from Hetzner at:
https://servdiscount.com

First Root
Location: Dusseldorf, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server, Colocation
URL: https://www.first-root.com

Nice people, cheap VPS but the support is kinda slow and the hardware is already 2-3 generations old.

Host Hatch
Location: US, UK, NL, JP, HK, SG, AU, SE
Products: VPS
URL: https://hosthatch.com

They have a lot of regions available, VPS pricing is good but the offered storage options are really tight.
They are using kinda recent EPIC hardware and most locations are 10G or even 40G, so performance is mostly great.
The storage VPS on the other hand are really slow. So don't think about to run a nextcloud or anything on them. Just use them as pure backup storage.
The Support is really nice, but sometimes awfully slow.. Once had a ticket waiting 7 days for a reply...

Contabo
Location: DE, UK, US, SG, JP, AU
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server
URL: https://contabo.com

Often one of the first names you get when asking for cheap servers.
But.. I personally would not recommend them.
Last time I've checked the VPS servers where heavily oversold.
idk, if you have RAM intensive applications which don't really need that much CPU performance they are probably a good pick, but otherwise I would not choose them.

Datalix
Location: Frankfurt, DE
Products: VPS, Dedicated Server
URL: https://datalix.eu

Just recently discovered them, not tested any of their products yet. But they seem to be reasonable priced.

Please don't see this as a endorsement for those providers.
Just a couple of providers I had in mind right now.

@cybersmog@phpc.social avatar

@tfunken Hetzner does also colocation. So it might be possible that someone else is responsible for the machine.

tfunken,
@tfunken@lyratris.com avatar

@cybersmog Sure, but does that really makes any difference?

Not to mention that I'm pretty sure they have at least talked to Hetzner before they moved their site to them.

I previously was working for a hosting provider and we got approached by them. They where petty straight forward about who they are and asked for a confirmation from the management that we are willing to host them.
I can't say much about why they did that but it felt a bit like they made some bad experience with other providers that where kicking them sooner or later.

PS.: Our management back then had a Jewish background. Soo... they where not that eager to have them as a customer :neocat_laugh_nervous:

cybersmog,
@cybersmog@phpc.social avatar

@tfunken what I want to say: if the AFD has a contract with a completely different company which houses their servers in a Hetzner datacenter, Hetzner has no possibilities to prevent that.

shalien,
@shalien@projetretro.io avatar

@tfunken Yep that's how net neutrality works

pixelcode,
@pixelcode@social.tchncs.de avatar

@shalien @tfunken There must be no “neutrality” (approval) when it comes to the destruction of democracy, the deportation of non-Aryans, reeducation camps for political opponents or a ban on public-service broadcasting. What do you think will happen when we apply net neutrality to those whose first action in power would be to abolish net neutrality?

I thought we had long since left behind us the stage of “tolerance for intolerance”...

tfunken,
@tfunken@lyratris.com avatar

@shalien Actually, that has noting to do with net neutrality at all.

Hetzner is free do decide with who they are doing business with or not.
It's called "Vertragsfreiheit" in German law.

Also they had no problem to cancel contracts with various LGBTQ+ sites recently, so they are also free to cancel the contract with a nazi party.

ahhhhhhoniichan,

@tfunken uhhhhhh, I never heard of afd until today

tfunken,
@tfunken@lyratris.com avatar

@ahhhhhhoniichan Some far right party in Germany :neocat_sad:

eliasp,
@eliasp@mastodon.social avatar

@tfunken unfortunately not just "some", but the far-right party with around 20% of votes across Germany, in some states even close to 40%.

@ahhhhhhoniichan

MagicLike,
@MagicLike@mstdn.social avatar

@eliasp @tfunken @ahhhhhhoniichan I might put it like this: literal nazis
