I like the thing where starting a message with @example makes it ambiguous if you started the sentence with a capital letter or not

@Qyriad alternate universe where there are lowercase and capital @ and they have subtly different meanings in email addresses

@mrconorae @Qyriad there's also the at-for-all symbol, used to mass address all accounts on a domain

@emily @Qyriad oooor we do one better and ask them to add a combining modifier! 'latin lowercase a' + 'combining diacritic at circle' = '@'
think of the possibilities......

@mrconorae hmm... Combining Diacritic Cat Ears, anyone?

@emily @mrconorae @Qyriad @recursive

We totally need some of these. (I vaguely remember some dot-com boom era company using an “e” in an “@“ symbol — and then vanishing — anyone else remember this?)

i-at could have the swirl emerge toward the right, like the usual one in a boring old “@“. Then you could distinguish it from j-at.

emily,
@emily@sparkly.uni.horse avatar

@dpnash @mrconorae @Qyriad @recursive honestly I didn't have any better jokes for i and j so I intentionally made them identical :)

dpnash,
@dpnash@c.im avatar

@emily @mrconorae @Qyriad @recursive STEM-nerdy possibility:

"i"-at: (right swoop) square root of -@
"j"-at: (left swoop) square root of -@ for electrical engineers and Python programmers

mrconorae,
@mrconorae@mastodon.nz avatar

@dpnash @emily @Qyriad @recursive "k"-at: for mathematicians who didn't have enough imaginary numbers already and just have to keep making more

@mrconorae @dpnash @emily @Qyriad Once you know about hypercomplex numbers, it's hard to forget :)

loke,

@dpnash @emily @mrconorae @Qyriad @recursive I remember that too, and now I spent too much time searching for it and I can't find a single image. Image search is really bad for this search.

hypolite,

@emily @mrconorae @Qyriad Problem solved.
