ai6yr,

Montrose Search and Rescue: "Today, our team responded to a vehicle over the side call on Angeles Forest Hwy at MM 19.36. The vehicle was about 300' over the side. By the time our unit arrived on scene, the patient had self-extricated and was on the roadway. The roadway was wet and slick. This weekend, we have had two other weather-related calls. One hiker was suffering from exposure in the snow and two cyclists needed to be rewarmed by us. When the weather is excessively cold, hot, windy, rainy, etc, please reconsider your plans to visit the wilderness. "

@ai6yr That there is one fit victim. :blobcatgoogly:

I try to follow a few PCT thru hikers every year on the YT, but this year it is gruesome, with episode titles like "To Laguna and the ER." And most of them have not even hit the snow yet.

ai6yr,

@shonin I was curious if any of them could make ANY headway, with all that snow.

@ai6yr yikes! On the subject of vehicle rollovers - in Scotland just the other day this happened.. 😬 https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024/apr/13/lucky-to-be-alive-familys-motorhome-destroyed-by-freak-gust-of-wind

@ai6yr this morning in Fremont, we had a 911 call from Mission Peak (Alameda County), someone who was apparently injured too badly to walk the muddy trail. Turns out they were simply mired, it was too muddy to walk. The ATVs they sent from two different directions couldn't deal with the mud. The helicopter couldn't land close enough. I should probably look for an update, I have no idea how they got down. But I'm thinking hikers should turn around as soon as the mud seems to be a bit much.

@ai6yr they're okay, were extricated by helicopter. This involved more than two hours, three Fremont fire engine companies, a battalion chief, and the East bay regional park district helicopter and crew.

Please don't go hiking when the trails are that muddy. Turn around and go back.

@geographile @ai6yr Mission Peak is like a magnet for inexperienced hikers. With the trail heads in town, people think it's an easy hike. Not so much!

@mjausson @geographile @ai6yr That can be a fun one on a really hot day too!

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr look at all that lovely unshaded trail!

mjausson,

@croyle @geographile @ai6yr Doesn't matter how hot it is hiking up, the summit is always freezing.

@mjausson @geographile @ai6yr Always windy and chilly on top! But on a hot day if you use all your water on the way up it's a long way down in the baking sun again, since there's no shade most of the way either route.

@geographile@mastodon.social avatar

@croyle @mjausson @ai6yr I'd go from the east side or not at all. There are lovely hiking trails all over the east bay, no need to climb that one. (Even if I could anymore, but I can't. )

ai6yr,

@geographile Oh, mired in mud is the worst. You really need to turn back before that happens!!!
