It's the exact same playback across the board.

We won't own ANYTHING in just a few decades if we keep going this way. That's a guarantee.

@Adam_Cadmon1 We at the public library (an institution for EVERYONE supposedly) are concerned about this. Spending the public's money to own books and music and technology is useful. Spending the public's money for leases and licenses which, at the end of the day don't belong to you is harder to defend.

@Adam_Cadmon1 A lot of people fall into the trap of abundance. Whether it be Spotify, Apple Music, video streaming.. most working people don’t have the time to sample everything.

They end up with playlists and listen to the same stuff which is not even a fraction of what’s out there.

I did the math and I would actually save money by not subscribing to a music service and buying CDs or downloadable mp3s

@hasani @Adam_Cadmon1 that's where I'm at now.

I'm really curious if there's any potential for some sort of retroactive law that'd make IP like that still not ours

@jalcine @Adam_Cadmon1 Here is the real kicker.. and it’s something I only realized recently.

Physical disks are nothing more than physical keys to content. When they switched to digital keys, that enabled them to rent or restrict access at scale.

So in a sense the only time we could claim we owned video was back with VHS/Betamax

@jalcine @Adam_Cadmon1 One maxim that I live by is this:

“Whenever a corporation presents anything as being good for you, either it isn’t or what they are proposing is way better for them”

@hasani @Adam_Cadmon1
The companies did the math too, and it's why they are so set on such services.

But it's not just streaming. Video game rental like Xbox live gaming with gamepass also does this.

Even libraries have this issue, without any commercial model, the reason a library is allowed to loan you books, is that your processing speed for books, even if you were the smartest, most voracious reader, will be outpaced by a world of publishers.

@Adam_Cadmon1 If buying isn't owning, pirating isn't stealing. And subscriptions that do not provide ongoing benefit will be cancelled.

@log @Adam_Cadmon1 Just this morning I was using a pair of gloves to illustrate to 11yo how a mortgage works, in which the gloves were a house, she was the bank, and the loose change in the center console played the role of interest. I believe I did it well, since she asked questions that indicated comprehension.

But now I'm wondering... Will any of that be relevant 10 years from now? Will the rest of her life include the concept of purchasing something & actually maintaining possession of it?

@courtcan @Adam_Cadmon1 I remember 2007-2008.

Mortgages might fall apart. Again. Rich people's money blackholes are buying houses directly now. They want us to rent through an app that uses AI to make people homeless.

Learn to hack remote digital locks and discount home monitoring systems now. Teach your kids how to pick or bump cheap mechanical locks. Learn where to cut the secret antennas in your car.

The undermining of real ownership by ordinary proles is consistent and observable.

@log @courtcan @Adam_Cadmon1 there is already a move to make cars unaffordable so you have to lease or hire them, electric cars have remote kill switches & require a connection to the manufacturer (via app) to use/charge, we have been forced into a rent culture where you own very little or no assets, what a grim reality capitalism has created without true oversight from our elected officials, we even struggle to own our own data, that is why the rich hate the EU...
