@RickiTarr @jwcph @done Only relevant for matchmaking purposes, and mostly from when personal ads charged by number of words. Now you can have an entire web page describing what you are and what you're looking for.

I think some people are just salty because they aren't finding what they want, and they're blaming everyone else for not being that. And also for not wanting to be that. Which seems like jealous stupidity, a thing most people don't want in their romance.

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.

@memphismary @sillyCoelophysis @jhooper @RickiTarr Last time around, the prospective landlord wanted me to pay the CRA's fee for their credit check of me. And then told me, when I asked, they would not provide a copy of said report if they denied me after seeing it. I told them that would violate federal law. They told me, and I quote, "fuck you I hope you die homeless".

So yeah, a "bad landlord" list would be great.

log,
@log@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@memphismary @sillyCoelophysis @jhooper @RickiTarr Or, if you include those that illegally fail to refund the security deposit, the "all landlords" list.

log,
@log@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@memphismary @sillyCoelophysis @jhooper @RickiTarr If a prospective landlord gets big mad when you do nothing more than telling them what the law is governing a proposed transaction, to me that is a red flag that they intend to violate one or more laws that they already know about, and don't want to be accountable for it. They sure do know plenty about eviction and whatnot. If they're getting into the credit reporting business too, they should probably self-educate.

You'd think there'd be an entire genre of games like that. We need to come up with our generations D&D. Open source like a mofo and modern setting.

log,
@log@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@Adam_Cadmon1 I'm working on one in my spare time, meaning it'll be ready for release in 2040.

Core mechanic is to roll a d6 and a d12 for most checks, and keep pooled points for "must succeed" checks, like Cypher. D&D d20 distribution is too flat, and GURPS 3d6 distribution is too pointy. d6d12 makes a nice trapezoidal distribution with an integer average and reasonable range of 10 +/- 8. I want mecha/kaiju mechanics, too. Because sometimes an Urbie needs to fight Godzilla.

If there is anyone above the law, anyone else could be. Some of those people are going to try, instead of participating usefully in cooperative civilization. This is why a corrupt justice system screws all of us who rely on trust to exist.

So, what's the thing, what's the big thing no one can help you with? How do you cope with it?

log,
@log@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr Absurdism. Life has no meaning, but it always feels like it should. Other people try to help by essentially telling me my worldview is incorrect. Coping would be denial. I can only accept it, and squirm under the onus of my own false perceptions, or play along with everyone else's overlapping worlds of make-believe.

Some people's universes are fun to play in. Others force people into their hellish dystopia. I try to be among the former.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

log,
@log@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@RickiTarr I'm in northern Mittelkarst, the cryptid political jurisdiction that roughly underlays portions of Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama (north of the river). There are a lot of dwarves and goblins in this state, so it leans United Miners Party most years. Plenty of hidden caves and glamour glades around, so housing isn't as expensive as most other states. But rent still seems super high anyway. Could always be better, but there are a lot of ways it could be worse.

What cracks me up is when you go to a restaurant, and they ask if you've been there before, and then they say, "Well, we do things a little different here", and then it's exactly like every other restaurant, but more expensive.

log,

@RickiTarr At one of those, they made guacamole right there at the table! The place without stainless steel surfaces that get cleaned while you work, instead of sorta wiped down after every load of customer, and where people can see you doing it wrong in very small batches. Otherwise completely the same restaurant as everywhere else.

Having gained awareness that this is a marketing tactic to deliver advertising for the place I'm already in, and a crass solicitation for repeat business before even trying it once, I now answer it with "Do you give a first-timers' discount?" which is a calculated adversarial response, because I don't actually care about discounts as much as not receiving lines from a marketing script.

Okay, this might sound weird, but this is what I'm thinking of today. I'm assuming most of you know the idiom, "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." I know it's about looking at the horse's teeth to check it's age and health, but in my heart I have an alternate history where it's about The Trojan Horse, which doesn't really even make much sense, but it's still living there rent free.

So, does anyone else do this, make up alternate histories for words or phrases? If you do, I'd love examples!

@janettespeyer If all you have is money, and all you want is more of it, the best way to help the Fediverse is by buying stock in X, Meta, and Alphabet, then clamoring loudly for better monetization.

Donors can help the Fediverse by paying for hosting and bandwidth, getting a solid return paid in gratitude and community.
