Is it possible to make Windows Search only choose files that are actually on my computer?

I'm actually not interested in web results at all, and those only slow down the rate that I can get at files on my computer. I actually checked my search history, and funnily enough, all of my search history is comprised solely of things I tried to search my computer for, but it decided to feed me web results instead.

@cadeybunny This article tells you how to turn off web searches...A bit lower in the article itself, basically boils down to editing Group Policy settings! Apparently this doesn't work if you have Home Edition which sucks so much, as a lot of users just have a need for Home. 🙃

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds oh my god it's in the registry??

They really went out of their way to make it as inconvenient as possible .

I actually also am on Windows 10. I'm imagining that it's still in the registry in windows 10, just not in the Group Policy Editor or whatever it is in W11.

@cadeybunny Microsoft is being sussy with this for certain, they really don't want users to turn off web search. I wonder if it has something to do with inflating Bing usage numbers.

It would be a struggle to find the particular entry (as it would certainly be there somewhere). If one screws up changing an entry it will be absolutely system breaking.

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds Alright, I was able to adapt these instructions to Windows 10. Thank you!

This worked for me:

In Windows 10 the registry key that seems to have worked is

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

then add a DWORD (32-bit) to that folder, and call it DisableSearchBoxSuggestions

Then set its value to 1.

Be very careful when messing with regedit as always (in the event anyone sees and follows this)

@WanderingInDigitalWorlds ...okay, this didn't fully work at least. I'm still getting bing results. I shall keep searching for myself.

@cadeybunny I had a feeling it would be dodgy, even with a PC Restart there was a chance it wouldn't work as the Registry is just Black Magic. Can rebound or simply not work at times.
