Good morning & if you're in Venice make sure you pay you €5 entry fee to the city which debuts today (and will be levied on the 29 projected busiest days this year).

Enforced by random checks (with fines of €50-300 for non-compliance), many other city authorities will be watching to see what the effects are.

The lobbying to keep the charge low may have lessened its deterrence value for those not staying overnight in the city... but an interesting experiment nonetheless!

@ChrisMayLA6 a further incentive to visit Venice in the winter when there are way less tourists around! 😉

@gpollara

I'm guessing that's exactly the reaction they're looking for.... but the Q. is whether a €5 charge will accomplish that or just be swallowed into expected holiday costs....

@ChrisMayLA6 yes, exactly. My gut instinct is the latter. The place is such a magnet for the mass tourists (including large organised groups), that my reaction above will be dwarfed by those with no choice but to just pay, raising revenue for the city.

(my cynical start to the day! 😅)

@gpollara @ChrisMayLA6 There's been probably also a contradiction in that the city needs tourism money - so this nudge looks like a gesture about keeping away poor people from nearby who will come by bus, not big spenders who fly in.

@Loukas @gpollara

I'm not sure 'poor' tourists are getting to Venice... I think the implication yo make about revue raising is in the ned more likely the effective result

@ChrisMayLA6 @gpollara Why wouldn't poor tourists make it to Venice? Or, even more pointedly, poor people from Romania who want to work as beggars there.

@Loukas @gpollara

I was thinking domination of organised tours & the transport costs of getting to the city... but equally not including those who are entering Venice to try to make some money - who I would have designated something other than tourists... but I agree with you comment on these other entrants

@ChrisMayLA6 @gpollara You can get a bus from Milan to Venice for less than ten euros. And sure, the big operators won't be affected. Making sure they shave the marginal actors but leave the big spenders untouched is a hallmark of this kind of flat tax nudging.
