Amazon adds its 10,000th Rivian electric delivery van to its fleet

The online retailer has doubled its number of EV vans since July.

So many men’s first instinct is to be condescending, because they think it will immediately place them in a power position over me. But, like, you just told me this interaction matters to you – and you’re emotionally invested in winning it for some reason. With that knowledge alone I could crush you, baby boy

unhook2048,

@ryanhoulihan I wanted to jump in and condescend your post by saying something like "sure Ryan, I'm sure it's first instinct" but wanted to be sure to communicate that I'm just kidding, it's an interesting insight.

My wife went to new physical therapy, and found it was in an open, crowded gym with no one wearing masks. She walked out, got home, and called around for another PT option. She found a place where they offered to wear masks when she visited, provided she gives them a heads up. Why aren't more medical offices and services offering this?

unhook2048,

@augieray My family and I have been without a family doctor for 5 years(appx), and there's not a new 1000 doctors available anytime soon.

But to address the question, because freedom. The same reason vaccines weren't forced on individuals, your car can go faster than the posted speed limit, you can still purchase alcohol, cigarettes, and guns. Get a good N95 and move on, I'm sorry that she was in a situation which made her uncomfortable, but happy to hear she found care that satisfies her.

Hi there, if you don’t want me to hit you, please carry this sign that says “please don’t hit me” with you always. Otherwise, I can’t possibly be held responsible if I hit you. Because it’s in my nature to hit you. I can’t live without hitting people. It’s just who I am and what I do. Thank you for your understanding in this delicate matter.

Sincerely,

unhook2048,

@aral I'm genuinely curious what you perceive the solution to this is? They modelled it after an already in place model that has worked seemingly well. I'd postulate that if companies took web presence and other technical matters more seriously by hiring and paying people better, this wouldn't be a problem or even a conversation.

unhook2048,

@aral well okay then. I mean you're not wrong regarding the opt-in, I suppose I just wish we lived in a world where the capitalistic approach of things could be ignored, it would allow us to act and move in a direction we agreed would ultimately be better for humanity, rather than relying and hoping on political leaders and c level execs to be ... well, not how they are now.

I also think the competative nature of the LLM models is a step in the right direction, Claude exists.

They told us COVID mortality had diminished so it was safe to return to 2019 behaviors, but they're silent on the growing risks to long-term health of reinfections.

They told us we could stop masking because was low, which only boosted more surges and long-term illness.

They told us we could go back to normal because we had monitoring in place, then they ended the monitoring.

I fear the end of 2023 and 2024 will be risky--we just won't see it in headlines until it's too late.

After more than 2 decades my primary care physician retired, 2.5 years ago, it took me several months to find a suitable replacement, who after 6 months decided to stop seeing patients and focus on clinical research full time. Another search commenced - found a doctor and she's been great for the past year. Yesterday in the mail I received a notice that she's moving out of state.

This is the United States. It is hard to find a doctor that is 1) not in bed with the pharmaceutical companies, 2) moving me through a quick fire assembly line, and 3) actually considers alternate health solutions, ie DO instead of MD. The search begins again....

unhook2048,

@simplenomad I'd like to thank the US healthcare model who endorse profits over people for their influence on the Canadian healthcare market, such that the govt is defunding public HC without even having a private system available. 5 people, 4 years, no doctor

@nickheer On Zuck and masculinity: Bezos used to be a stereotypical pencil-neck geek and then at some point I guess decided he needed to be ripped. Having worked alongside him for months (and known him for a bit before that), it always makes me side eye photos of him now. It’s such a strange performative thing, like, being a billionaire isn't enough (or being a human isn’t). I guess it’s probably tied to theories of longevity too. I wouldn't be surprised if he takes a slurry of 25 supplements.

A note to the roughly 5 other people on the planet who run their own mail server - do you reject the spam/scam/malware source of the email (returning a reject automagically) or do you let the process quietly discard it? I do the latter.

It made sense when a lot of people ran their own mail servers (mainly businesses) as it could delay and maybe prevent some from recently the bad email before the source got added to a block list, but now with everyone using something like gmail (BTW a huge source of spam in recent years) it doesn't seem worth it.

unhook2048,

@simplenomad It's more a decision based on the classification of "spam".

there's more to it than just saying "spam", is it a phishing e-mail that's generically written, and proven to be intentionally badly written in order to lure?

Is it spearphishing to a pointed group or individual with targeted information?

And don't mistake me, I'm nowhere even in the same universe of knowing this material and these various classifications. I'm just saying it's not a blanket to say "Spam".

unhook2048,

@simplenomad I think it sucks that the human factor here is what is actually the problem. the system(e-mail) works as intended. It sounds to me anyways like I should really be listening to where you land and hopefully learn a thing or 5000.

At some point I speculate there will be an AI for that. But more importantly, I hope that in the future scamming people isn't a viable option to live and eat food; I'd like that to simply not be a thing people feel the need to do because we've "evolved".

the narative from there takes hold, and once that news reaches that bubble, the doors get closed and the topic is left to grow and develop into a fear and hate mongering narrative of lies and deciept. None of which have been shown to be on point. This is the game.
