When I did great work for a hippie store run by shitty people, we had a regular who came in late on Saturdays, to avoid people I later found out. She spoke Farsi. No one liked helping her find supplements, they felt she was aggressive.
Frustration can look that way.
Though we had difficulty at first, she became my buddy and I hers.
Started using her phone to translate to us both and we got where we needed to.
I can’t imagine demanding this of anyone. Such an offense.
The Venn diagram of language vigilantes and “free speech absolutists” is a circle.
Odd these stories never involve a man telling another man he must speak English.
This woman happened to be speaking Navajo. Another viral case involved a Muslim woman speaking Welsh. But weird I cannot ever recall someone being told to stop speaking Scots, German, Gaelic, Swedish… Wonder why.
Come to my town. Speak Afrikaans, a language that gives me the creeps. What’s the problem?
@LindaCollins11 I've seen a report* of someone coloured using a phone being told to speak English by an ignorant monoglot in Ireland only for them to be told the language being used was Irish.
In some cases that's just Americans being too open and loud about things Europeans would keep private. American oversharing with strangers is a well known thing.
@LindaCollins11 I did however once call a Karen on the carpet for her and her kids making fun of how an Asian woman ahead them in line in the DMV was speaking and how she was dressed. Karen did not like that at all, but she shut the hell up.
