Why do so many Democrats think that, as important as abortion rights are, it is ok to support Democratic warmongers who literally are responsible for killing women and children in other countries because of abortion?

@rchusid ill try to answer this honestly as a democrat who will vote for Biden. I’m horrified by his choices in the Middle East. But I’m trying to think of how to bring about the better outcomes. Not voting for Biden makes it more likely Trump wins, and as far as I can tell, no more likely democrats “learn a lesson” (ie didn’t after Nader or Stein).

Trump winning is a horrible outcome for so many reasons. Climate is top of my mind. With no upside. So I make the best chess move I have.

@Jackiemauro After Nader Democrats campaigned quite further to the left than they are now. (Unfortunately Obama didn't govern as he campaigned, and Democrats paid a big price for that).

Stein didn't get enough votes in 2016 to really change things, especially as Trump temporarily drove voters back to the Democrats. If Stein gets 5-10 percent this year it could have major ramifications.

Trump winning would be a horrible outcome but we are getting the same horrible results under Biden right now.

@rchusid no, I don’t think we’re getting the same horrible results as we could. Things are bad, but they could be much much much worse.

And Nader may have caused a blip in left leaning politicking, but bush did horrific things. Would I trade that blip for the Iraq war? Torture? The complete missed opportunity on climate? No way.

We have got to find a better way to move left than crossing our arms during presidential elections. The upside is too small and the downside far too dire.

@Jackiemauro Things are worse under Biden than they would probably be under Trump, primarily because Democrats go along with Biden but resist Trump.

For example, Trump would not have been able to do anywhere as much harm as Biden re allowing Covid to spread as people ignored Trump's ridiculous statements, but believe Biden when he spread misinformation...

@Jackiemauro

Another example was seen this month. Biden greatly expanded warrantless mass surveillance of Americans and his pressure on Congress led to enough Democrats backing him to block an amendment to require a warrant to cause it to lose by only one vote. Trump would never had gotten such backing from Democrats to suppress civil liberties...

@Jackiemauro

When you use the horrors of Bush as reason to support current Democrats keep in mind that Biden supported Bush's actions and is to the right of Bush/Cheney. Biden wrote much of the Patriot Act even before 9/11. If you opposed Bush--as you should--it makes no sense to support the far worse Biden. Today's Democrats are to the right of Bush/Cheney.

Jackiemauro,
@Jackiemauro@fosstodon.org avatar

@rchusid oh man. I think it’s really good to be critical of dem politicians. But to believe Biden is worse for Americans and the world than Bush and Cheney were… and to believe the dems will provide a sufficiently strong push back to an emboldened Trump with a more experienced, more loyal set of toadies…

It’s just not reasonable.

rchusid,
@rchusid@med-mastodon.com avatar

@Jackiemauro But Biden supported the same wars as Bush/Cheney. He supported the same restrictions on civil liberties as Bush/Cheney and pushed for them even before 9/11. He also pushed Reagan to the right on crime and mass incarceration.

As I said last week, Biden got enough votes to block warrant requirement by just one vote. Biden could pull in Democrats to vote for such restrictions on civil liberties. Trump could not have obtained the Democratic votes that Biden could .

@rchusid i believe you. He also:

  • made the largest investments in climate ever
  • managed a hugely successful vaccination campaign
  • supports trans and women’s rights (eg PUMP act)
  • forgave student debt
  • appointed a strongly anti-monopoly head to the ftc who just got rid of non competes and restored net neutrality
  • made it legal for Medicaid to negotiate prices
  • instituted a minimum corporate tax

These may not impress you, but they are meaningful. Meanwhile…

@rchusid Trump has the Supreme Court basically declaring himself a king. He refused to leave once, why wouldn’t he be better at it a second time?

He wants to dismantle all environmental regulations. The climate doom we enter without aggressive action in the next 5 years is horrifying, much less what will happen if we move backwards.

He wants a national abortion ban. More pregnant people dying and being disabled. Think they’ll honor the filibuster to avoid that? I wouldn’t bet my life on it.
