@ai6yr That’s a rotary phone!

@ai6yr @ClimateJenny A rotary might actually connect? Or does the rotary signal even work over the lines now? For years I have been hanging onto landline phones that I knew would work in a power outage. Not any more, but that's about connecting to the modem.

My dad used to maintain the tel exchange room at the Georgia Railroad. He would take me in the room, point to a thing like a ratchet that would start clanking down from the top and say, "there's the boss making a call now."

ai6yr,

@shonin @ClimateJenny So, rotary phones still connect if you are on a traditional landline. I have a 1940's rotary phone which I tested this on. They do not, however, work on most VoIP systems, as the pulse number dial does not work on those systems; you have to invest in a pulse-to-tone converter ($) if you want outgoing capability. Reminds me, I need to reconnect it. It was originally installed in Honolulu, Hawaii, before Hawaii was a state, somewhere around WWII. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYT8F1WeffI
