strypey,

The social psychology of card reader location. Local buses in most parts of the country have their card readers on the opposite side of the aisle from the driver.

But in Canterbury they're located next to the driver. Which means even though the driver doesn't have to do anything to receive payment, they're more likely to have interactions with passengers.

@strypey in Canterbury, the driver receives cash payment when an in-person Metrocard topup is made and it requires using the card reader during the transaction. Contrast with Wellington where there is no option to topup Snapper via cash to driver

In Tamaki Makaurau you can't use cash on the bus at all.

@strypey In Nantes, I show my phone to the driver to prove I've bought an e-ticket (and say hello at the same time, obviously). Not all, but many people call thank you when they get off.

I try to do that.
