I like most of my ferns (so far), but ripping out maidenhair ferns all over the place was not on my to do list. It is satisfying in a way tho and at least I’m not allergic to them yet.
@sollat@KayJanes Yeah, I get that. There is a kind of satisfaction to it (I can usually be heard muttering "gotcha ya bastard"). I just wish the roots hadn't spread so far ...
@fkamiah17@sollat We have wee oak trees that show up under the azaleas on a regular basis. So I often wonder about those root systems just waiting to get a toe in the door.
@KayJanes@fkamiah17
Omg. We have cottonwood trees around and they blow bits of cottony seed everywhere for a few weeks. They make these little starts in drifts everywhere. It’s almost like it’s snowing, but you know it’ll be a pain later.
@sollat@fkamiah17 We have the same or similar here. Nearly forgot that it'll be that time soon. 🤧 Tho we never know if the weather will keep them blowing around or rain.
@KayJanes@fkamiah17
I’ve been seeing the occasional bit blowing around on sunny days for the last couple of weeks. They’re having fun taunting me. :blobcatlaugh:
@fkamiah17 Well .... to be honest, I'm glad I'm not alone. I feel so terrible pulling out all the volunteer ferns, but then I remember how much effort it took to remove some adult sword ferns that took over a corner. I'm guessing your varieties are similar to what we have?
@KayJanes I didn't do them the courtesy of finding out their variety. When I moved here, the bottom 10 x 15ft of my garden was completely engulfed with them but because there was a membrane in the soil, they grew sideways and so it's impossible to remove all the roots without digging up the entire area. So now, fern patrol is a regular feature of the spring, summer and autumn.
