my mom is pointing out that this anti-semitism definition makes it illegal to read most of the bible, given how often God declares the Israelites “evil” throughout the old testament
@wagesj45 ah, right, it’s just for the dept of education, so it would only apply to educators, but still, they could lose their job from it, which is up there with legality
@kellogh Kind of. It specifically updates the definition used when deciding whether or not a student has been discriminated against. You already couldn't discriminate against a student for being in a protected class. This just redefines what being antisemitic means in that context.
In one way, this is kind of a nothing-burger law, from what I can tell. :nothing_burger: At least functionally. It is a show. But shows like this set the stage for more down the line, which is what I'm worried about
Luckily, it only applies to the Department of Education and how they adjudicate discrimination cases. But the powers that be would definitely like for you to self-censor your opinions for fear of being labeled a bigot.
@wagesj45 yeah, if i were subject to it, i’d have a hard time saying anything at all about Israel. the definition is not clear at all, a lot of room for politically driven interpretation
