This little video from the channel Primitive Technology, one of my favorites, is an amazing reminder of why we should not use too much ash on clay-dominant soil.

Clay plus ahs is the recipe for cement. It will compact your soil if you put too much of it.

Demonstration... I am so glad someone decided to make a video about this.

@compost If you need cement for whatever reason (e.g. rice basin), it’s perfect.

@melanie @levampyre @compost no, but it like some level of moisture (i think) and since our "soil" is about 3 m of solid, quick-draining sand with little organic matter and scorching full sunlight, I made a little clay basin in the shade for ginger et al.
