Fun fact about : The only file that is strictly needed to get a Linux system going after the kernel can boot is /sbin/init.

It's process number 1. It starts everything else.

You can get a working computer if you just make one C program. The Linux kernel starts one program, and the rest is up to you.

Why would you roll your own Linux with just the kernel and /sbin/init as the single program that runs?

In terms of just having a laptop or gaming computer? Ignore this. Go buy it at a retail store. Much easier.

If you're inventing a new device, however? Then it's useful knowledge.

You have access to decades of work that was put into making the Linux kernel run on just about any digital device. For something like an ARM Cortex-A series chip, this can save you a lot of time in terms of hardware development.
