@whitequark I made one of these when I worked for the US government. The progress bar was just faked, the api we had only had a "is it done?" call.
So I programmed it to consistently go up and stall at 95% until it finished.

@whitequark i bet you also don't like those "close doors" buttons on elevators that do nothing.

they should add a fake "go faster" button to the fake progress bars.

@whitequark When I was an early GNOME user someone told me that their HIG ("human interface guidelines") made this annoying behaviour illegal! It had to either reliably progress, or bounce back and forth it if couldn't estimate. Been on GNOME ever since.
