Does anyone else get the feeling that, rather than listen to their own or their constituents' humanity and stop the genocide, the Powers That Be ™️ have decided to drop the last vestiges of pretence that the west is any kind of a democracy and go full fascist?
@fkamiah17 To do otherwise would mean questioning white supremacist, oligarchical empire. It would mean those with wealth, power, & advantage giving some of it up. They refuse to countenance it.
@fkamiah17 I don't know how to put this but they do this repeatedly over decades, but mostly people don't notice, or do notice but don't think democracy works anyway.
@bakuninboys No, I'm very aware of that, but it does feel like the gloves are off and they're not even trying to dress it up as "law and order" or something any more. I don't know what voting system you have in Aus, but FPTP is designed to maintain the status quo, which gradually erodes participation because people think their votes don't matter (which a lot of them don't) or that "politicians are all the same".
@fkamiah17 yeah true they've been gradually not even making a show of it any more. Like saying the quiet part out loud way more often. But often I think it's because I'm paying more attention now.
@bakuninboys I don't know - I've always been a politics/news junkie, as well as a cynic, but these days it's as if they don't even acknowledge there is a quiet bit.
Whatever the truth of it is, they're all fucking monsters these days.
@fkamiah17 My view: The punters are the real monsters, we're just too polite to call them out for it. Even at the base layer, people voted for Scomo. They vote for Dutton. Every scumbag in politics has a whole engine of people voting, creating consent, people who want to hurt others and are just shitty human beings.
You meet them on Reddit. Go to r/australian and tell me the politicians aren't a reflection of the worst parts of our society. Democracy means their vote is equal to ours. How do you fix that?

No, because the powers that be are a reflection of the society, and how society deals with shocks and threats, and what it perceives as threats. The rightward shift towards fascism tells me that the broad population actually rather fancies the idea of a strongman dictator over a complicated democracy that includes minority voices, so long as the dictator is their guy.
@mloxton Well you're clearly not paying attention to anything, nor taking account of low turnout and FPTP. That may well be true in America, but you've always liked fascists. You did your level best to make sure that Nuremberg would never happen.
@HeatherMJ If the media actually reported all the protests and demonstrations and vigils and marches and shutdowns and university encampments, rather than just perving at the violence and begrudgingly writing up the biggest events, then the people who aren't seeing the full picture might get off their arses and join us. But that's not serving the status quo, so that's where journalism will fail.
