So... there was a shooting at Drake's house today. Someone got shot.

🤔 Is this rap beef still funny? Not a rhetorical question. Is it "real" yet? Is this entertaining enough?

For the record, no, I don't think Kendrick or any of his people had anything to do with it. If something bad happens to Drake because of them directly, it will most likely happen in LA or the East Bay or Atlanta or Miami. Because that's where it always happens.

@mekkaokereke Saw the headline & thought: Mekka called it & I'm sure he ain't happy being right.

Sure, it's possible that it's totally unrelated. But there's also a good chance that the tough guy who pulled the trigger was inspired by all the tough talking of more high-profile figures.

Because just like with any other kind of grandiose violent rhetoric, even if the people talking have no intent on acting, they are still being reckless by failing to take accountability for their influence.

@mekkaokereke I’d be surprised if the whole diss battle isn’t a coordinated PR campaign.

@beckett

It is definitely a PR campaign, but it's not coordinated. It's designed to sell rap records. Or more accurately these days, streams. And it's doing that. It has produced a number of top 10 streamed songs. And "Not like Us" is a certified hit that will be listened to for years to come.

But this is a very dangerous way to sell some song streams. A better way is for Beyoncé to release a country album, or a House music album. Or for Taylor Swift to release a Taylor Swift album.

@mekkaokereke I've found the Kendrick v. Drake beef FASCINATING because of the way you can see gatekeeping of blackness and definitions of masculinity, etc. play out across nationalities and cultural groups in real time. But I also feel sad and sick at my stomach watching it - because I know the underlying original sin of slavery and racism is the catalyst for all of it. And inevitably some folks will pay real world prices or even lose their lives over something because of the attention.
