@exkclamation that move is called a freegen. I loved it the first time I saw it (15 years ago), but never mastered it because it's too unpredictable (and kind of scary). You basically tug the yo-yo up, let go of the counterweight, let the yo-yo wind up then unwind, and catch the counterweight again.
@DemocracySpot 5A (aka "freehand") style of yo-yoing is performed with a counterweight on the end of the string. Since you aren't attached the yo-yo, you can transfer which hand is holding the counterweight or let go completely. I love this style of play.
