@exkclamation that move is called a freegen. I loved it the first time I saw it (15 years ago), but never mastered it because it's too unpredictable (and kind of scary). You basically tug the yo-yo up, let go of the counterweight, let the yo-yo wind up then unwind, and catch the counterweight again.

I've decided to put some work into it now, and try to get comfortable with it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wzLzbGWLXZM

@docpop yeah, seems like it would be terrifying to try… but you make it look so easy! 🤯

@docpop

I've never seen a yo-yo thrown like that, leave the hands of the yoyoer. And props to The Heavy Twelves! 🔥

@DemocracySpot 5A (aka "freehand") style of yo-yoing is performed with a counterweight on the end of the string. Since you aren't attached the yo-yo, you can transfer which hand is holding the counterweight or let go completely. I love this style of play.

If you liked Heavy Twelves, I also like this album they released with Mestizo on vocals. Sort of psychedelic boom-bap. https://fakefour.bandcamp.com/album/big-bad-death
