@mcc I gave a talk ten years ago where the main point was "the AI apocalypse came and went years ago, corporations are AI that runs on humans and we just carry out their algorithms for them"
@darius@c0dec0dec0de@cstross man, I need to dig up more of the notes from the stuff I wrote back in the late 90s/early aughts. It was never fully fleshed out, but the idea several collaborators and I anchored on at the time was an AI future in which “true AI” never happened, but probabalistic machines fed on huge quantities of human-authored material were convincing enough that civilization just started using them to deskill creative, assistive, and analysis work.
@eaton@darius@c0dec0dec0de@cstross there’s something fitting about how hard it would be to convince people this was real now that everyone has been competing to build evidence-faking machines.
@wilbr@darius@mcc Not even necessarily that—just, if you’re going to remove our jobs, give us another way to live or another way to rebalance the labour market. The weekend, for example, means that there’s less labour available (so the fact there’s less needed post Industrial Revolution doesn’t mess everything up). On that basis the current AI “revolution” should be giving us the 4 (3? … 2??) day week.
@johnaldis@darius@mcc 30 hour or 4 day work week with current compensation OR $20 federal minimum wage is absolutely already beyond reasonable, but I think AI specifically is about as hyped as "blockchain" and "metaverse" and was an excuse to fire a lot of people and hurt unionizing but will mostly be a short term rebalancing away from junior-level "code monkeys" and outsourcing that were bad anyway. You know what they say, "a computer should never make business decisions"
@wilbr@johnaldis@darius i am happy to work with offshored contractors but would never, ever, ever want to work at a place where coworkers are using Microsoft Copilot
Had this thought when a friend sent me this image. This is very clearly an actual photo of an actual physical object but it is just as clearly generated by AI
