Thinking about how Mozilla is "pivoting to AI" but DeepSpeech, one of the very few "AI" products you could possibly find a positive use for (pure-local speech recognition), is not only a Mozilla product but so abandoned that you actually have to downgrade to Python 3.9 to run it

Still catching up on back issues of Modern Railways. Great to see this comment from Lumo and Hull Trains MD Martin Gilbert. Bi-mode isn't always best!

@25kV Maybe we should put catenaries on all railway lines, just in case the diesel engines on the DMUs running there fail.

I feel like very recently— like, the last month— Google has gotten massively worse about aggressively correcting acronyms to unrelated, similarly-spelled words. Like look at this search where I search for the wiki for the C# game library FNA, and Google simply decides, without even offering a "Did you mean…", that it would be more interesting if I had instead been looking for "FNAF"

ratsnakegames,
@ratsnakegames@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc I've switched to Duckduckgo but they're not that different, sadly. Would kill for a search machine that has a "no, that is not what I want, stop correcting me" button, like Google used to.

Web traffic analytics company's new figures find that at the moment Windows 10's market share is continuing to go up while Windows 11's market share is actually going down https://www.neowin.net/news/windows-10-reaches-70-market-share-as-windows-11-keeps-declining/

um, actually that sounds like a good reason to go back to Windows 10

Something I've been noticing about search engines (well, google) recently is how bad they are at respecting word order in cases where it matters. Like, you search "convert x to y" and they match "convert y to x". Or this morning I'm searching "inset diamond in square equation" and i am indeed finding overwhelmingly things that contain both the words "diamond" and "equation", such as the "diamond method" for quadratics. But nothing related to insetting diamonds in squares.

ratsnakegames,

@mcc Why would anybody ever google the phrase "What is diamond 💎 ?"

@mcc I googled it and apparently it is a device that can cool liquids (and nothing else) really quickly, so you don't need to store your Doctor Pepper cans in the fridge. Which is, admittedly, at least as revolutionary as the internet.

So I'm trying to install a piece of software on Linux, and I run a "./launch_installer.sh", and immediately it prints a message suggesting it is unpacking a JRE so it can run the installer inside the JRE, and I wonder if I am going to a dark place here

NOTE TO ZOOMERS: That's Java Runtime Environment not the other thing. "Java" is a programming language people used in the 1800s, when programming meant making punchcards for Jacquard looms

ratsnakegames,

@mcc As a Java dev - having your Java program download & install its own runtime, rather than use what is already installed and hope for the best seems like a REALLY GOOD idea.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.

I am trying to take a program that works on Win32 and build it on Linux. An enum with a field named "Always" is failing to compile with a strange error. With a sinking suspicion, I look in the system headers and discover that /usr/include/X11/X.h is "Always" to 2.

The Open Group, what the hell??? I don't suppose X11 has an equivalent of WIN32_LEAN_AND_MEAN NOMINMAX does it … :(

Spinoff of this thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/111948688438400327

I found out recently about Interlingua, where the design is any speaker of a romance language should be able to mostly comprehend it without being taught it first. And I'm frustrated to find I find the project pretty cool, and can in fact read it unprepared as an English/Spanglish speaker, and the reason this frustrates me is because the thing that introduced me to Interlingua was finding out that it had been adopted by the Urbit project

ratsnakegames,
@ratsnakegames@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc Thanks to the various simplification projects (simplified chinese in the PRC, shinjitai in Japan...) there's a fair bit of divergence even in how hanzi and their various derivatives look so it's not like they're perfectly interchangeable. There are many modern Japanese kanji which look exactly like their simplified Chinese counterparts but there are also many that look fairly different.

ratsnakegames,
@ratsnakegames@mastodon.social avatar

@mcc There are a lot of hanzi that have a radical to indicate the correct reading, but that is not universal, and not very intuitive, either - plus, Chinese has a pretty large sound inventory and is a tonal language, so even if you know the correct pronounciation, it can be really hard to pull off for a non-native speaker (and Japanese, at least, has a very different sound inventory, more limited phonotactics and is non-tonal).
