✅ A massive station in a city that’s not the capital
✅ 5 minutes timetabled to disembark, embark and reverse a 13 carriage train

Yep, that’s how good railways do it!

@jon The four big cities in NL each have central stations that are larger than Berlin Hauptbahnhof. It is what you get in a sparsely populated city-state.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@whvholst that also has Südkreuz, Gesundbrunnen and Spandau.

koen,
@koen@procolix.social avatar

@jon is that since if it is, it is the political capital. :)

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@koen Den Haag Centraal is a solid station! And HS isn’t too bad!

Marrekoo,
@Marrekoo@urbanists.social avatar

@jon @koen hs is pretty, like Haarlem.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@Marrekoo @koen Netherlands is the best at turning old stations into something functional today. I always appreciate it (and not just these two you mention)

@jon BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN THE CAPITAL!

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@cweickhmann and what was the capital has, what, 4 platforms? (Bonn Hbf)

slothrop,
@slothrop@chaos.social avatar

@jon Crucially, Frankfurt Hbf also has a foot tunnel that lets you change platforms at about the middle of the platform -- quite unlike Munich, where the key feature is that you get to see your connection train depart while you sprint down your arrival platform.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@slothrop it’s an amazing station. Even though grim in parts it’s impressive and functional.

werdahias,
@werdahias@pleroma.debian.social avatar

@jon @slothrop upon exiting your train you might encounter some addicts, sure. Does the station work ? Yes.

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@werdahias @slothrop absolutely.

slothrop,
@slothrop@chaos.social avatar

@werdahias @jon I grew up in the area. Let me just say that it was a lot more grim in the 80s and 90s.

cweickhmann,
@cweickhmann@qoto.org avatar

@slothrop During my time commuting to uni we called it “tunneling”. It’s indeed really cool to have that in stations with long platforms. @jon

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@cweickhmann @slothrop that assumes people want to change 🙂 Marseille St Charles used to have it, at least partially, but now all fenced off…

cweickhmann,
@cweickhmann@qoto.org avatar

@jon You mean like: real SNCF customers don’t need this? Touché. @slothrop

jon,
@jon@gruene.social avatar

@cweickhmann @slothrop I might get on a TGV without a ticket! Can’t be having that. Make everyone walk!
