The GameBoy had some amazing games. 🥰
I wasn't quite ready to let this system go, after speeding through Mario Land 2. So I played SML 1 too (first try, no savestates, 35 minutes) and I'm now replaying . I forgot how clever the game is at showing what you can do and how it keeps adding new things all the way until the end. I'm now at the second to last stage and I still haven't reached the "let's get this over with" state. 😁

@mforester I remember basically marathoning Donkey Kong '94 (i.e. this game) because it was so much fun. And I don't even normally play puzzle games! But despite its surprisingly epic length (which amusingly I didn't know about until I played through it, so I really got the "Mario chasing Donkey Kong through town" feel haha), its levels are interesting enough and the difficulty curve gradual enough, while also basically gfting a giant pile of extra lives that definitely came in handy after a while, that I enjoyed this quite a lot.

It's an excellent game, honestly. The difference between Super Mario Land (basically the first game for the system) and this game really shows how much more experience devs had with the system's capabilities by 1994.

Sidenote: the Super Game Boy manual has a whole section dedicated to this game. It was a little awkward when I had the SGB but didn't have this game as a kid, lol

@glennmagusharvey very well put. 🙂
I also remember playing this as a kid and being amazed at every new stage that popped up. I was so certain that it would be over after the first four levels (what's called the "Construction Site") as a kid and seeing the first stage was mindblowing. And it just kept going! 🤯

@mforester this is the kind of game Nintendo should bring to mobile. I’d love it if you could break out your phone, play a stage while waiting somewhere, throw it back in your pocket and come back later.

@UncannyKyle I actually tried just that, but with an emulator a while ago. This is one of those games that's almost impossible to play with a virtual gamepad on the touchscreen. It's so much more fun with hardware keys.
Other than that I agree that it's the perfect "pick up and play" game. I guess if they were willing, they could also come up with better touchpad controls eventually or adjust the gameplay to the controls.

@mforester The Game Boy will always be my favourite console for exact that reason^^

@TheRetroSven even a few years ago, I was sure that I'd never revisit the original GameBoy. Two buttons and huge grayscale pixels felt like too little after being exposed to modern games for so long.
But nowadays I find the limitations and what developers did with them fascinating. If it's a good game, designed especially around these limitations, I don't really miss color or more buttons. And Donkey Kong in particular shows that you can have complex controls and mechanics with limited hardware.

@mforester Such a fantastic game. Loved it did the original DK levels and then went "but wait, there's more!"

@SimonSays it's a game that just keeps on giving.
And even though almost 100 levels sounds almost overwhelming, they fly by so fast. I'll have to check my play clock, but I guess you can still easily finish the game in 3 or 4h.

@mforester my sister had a Gameboy and I only remember two games. Tetris.Duh! The other was a TMNT game which I really enjoyed.

I remember showing someone at school how to play some parts of the game on his Gameboy and ended up completing the game during the lunch break.

@UKFilmNerd do you know which TMNT game it was?
My favorite was the third one, which was a Metroidvania game, before the term was coined. 😅
