The GameBoy had some amazing games. 🥰
I wasn't quite ready to let this system go, after speeding through Mario Land 2. So I played SML 1 too (first try, no savestates, 35 minutes) and I'm now replaying #DonkeyKong. I forgot how clever the game is at showing what you can do and how it keeps adding new things all the way until the end. I'm now at the second to last stage and I still haven't reached the "let's get this over with" state. 😁

@mforester I remember basically marathoning Donkey Kong '94 (i.e. this game) because it was so much fun. And I don't even normally play puzzle games! But despite its surprisingly epic length (which amusingly I didn't know about until I played through it, so I really got the "Mario chasing Donkey Kong through town" feel haha), its levels are interesting enough and the difficulty curve gradual enough, while also basically gfting a giant pile of extra lives that definitely came in handy after a while, that I enjoyed this quite a lot.

It's an excellent game, honestly. The difference between Super Mario Land (basically the first game for the system) and this game really shows how much more experience devs had with the system's capabilities by 1994.

Sidenote: the Super Game Boy manual has a whole section dedicated to this game. It was a little awkward when I had the SGB but didn't have this game as a kid, lol

Slowly making my way through SMB3 (All Star edition) on the Pocket. This thing has been great for quickly picking something up when I have a spare five minutes. Play through a couple levels, then put it down again.

@awilbert So how does this machine work? Does it just freeze the emulation on standby like a cell phone app does (or at least should)?

I know I've messed with Lemuroid before but it gave me some trouble with saves, which is why I basically don't play games on my phone lol

I think I'm going to do musical chairs with the IP addresses as it's taking a while to fix the routing issues with one of the IPs. There are two good IPs, which is all we need for our two servers. The other IPs can be used for the backend stuff for the hypervisor management and search servers.

Why the model is actually better for the digital ownership then any payed digital items.

Recently Sony took away it's users abilities to play movies they once bought. Idk if this means you can't play the movies even if they are installed on the hardware and you are playing it offline.

But say you bought a game like say Mario All Stars, well now you can't buy that if you wanted to (legally) it's gone. That likely has a big impact on fans since they won't sell Galaxy or sunshine in the eshop.

Then say you're playing Fortnite everything is free to begin with except the skins and emotes etc pretty much. If they took away a game mode, it's not the biggest deal since game is free and there are so many of them. Or say they stopped selling a skin in the game due to licensing issues. You can still likely use the skins you bought and get into a game freely for some time.

all in all, in free to play you don't lose as much when they do take away stuff, especially if you never payed to begin with. The game still goes on. With the situation, it doesn't look like the digital movies are lasting after suposibly paying for them. What's even the point?

@rob200 I'd say the problem here is that there is DRM on those movies to begin with. If there were no DRM, e.g. if they're just downloadable files that are independently viewable offline, then one would continue to be able to access them even if Sony stops supporting the downloading/streaming.

Meanwhile I'd say that free-to-play is problematic for a couple reasons: (1) it produces a game that depends on some sort of live service, which naturally can't last forever, while a standalone game can be preserved indefinitely, and (2) it encourages a game design goal of attracting players but frustrating them into paying money. (The exception is a game that is truly free and doesn't encourage such payment as a way to make the game more enjoyable.)

I find that I most "trust" games that are just one-time purchases, and I hope to be able to buy them DRM-free. These days I just don't even bother anymore with (for example) games on Steam, due to DRM.

To be fair, I mostly play single-player games. Multiplayer games that receive updates (e.g. MMOs) can be a different story, as they kinda require a live service to run. I don't really know what I'd prefer, but I might still prefer games that require some basic purchase level to play, since it gets rid of the second issue I mentioned.

I have no experience with Fortnite, but I used to think that way about Team Fortress 2, which I once played free-to-play. But I realized it wasn't just the cosmetics that were locked behind a purchase; it was also the fact that my inventory was quite small, and wouldn't fit anywhere near a useful variety of weapon options.
