The problem with Mastodon is that it's software not a service. That's where all the confusion starts.
@Gargron shouldve called the flagship instance something completely different. [insert platform name here] built on Mastodon. But of course hindsight is 20/20 and no one could've predicted the great migration. Perhaps people would've joined a Mastodon site as they previously browsed web sites?

Not really understanding the problem you are identifying. Is it that you think too many people are clustered on .social and .online? Certainly they are big instances, but there are lots of other good instances, as well as other apps. Seems like the whole thing is working pretty smoothly.
