imagine showing up in 1956 to someone who just got this whopping 3.75 megabyte harddrive delivered https://www.computerhistory.org/storageengine/first-commercial-hard-disk-drive-shipped/ with a fucking 2TB microSD card

haha loser u got this fuckin giant ass heavy metal box that draws all this power i can plug this 2TB microsd card into my android phone and do things you couldn't imagine in terms of pure compute power.

legit, imagine showing up to NASA while they're using a giant ass IBM mainframe in combination with human computers running mechanical calculators just being able to do their calculations almost instantly. get fucked lmao :xddd:

i like to think about this thought experiment primarily in regards to during the cold war. could you imagine if you just ended up with a modern cell phone alone? going back to just one up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colossus_computer lol or like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_I_Fire_Control_Computer haha yea i have something that can run this more efficiently. Of course modern cell phone operating systems probably are really incompatible with this but we just ignore that and focus on the pure computational capacity

@puppygirlhornypost ma'am there's people still working at NASA that have used such IBM mainframe; it was not that long ago

@efi I'm aware it was in the 60s-70s, and I am well aware that those people are still alive. I often wonder what they think about technology when it comes to pure processing power but I don't know anyone that I can ask off the bat. All the old people I know will tell me things like "I don't know! I don't consider ARPANET the internet BECAUSE I DIDNT HAVE ACCESS TO IT". I love doing that to my mom she will be like "back in my day we didn't have these fancy computers" and I'll point to things like ARPANET which happened way before her time anyway lol. mom i hate to break it to you but there were definitely computers when you were born you just didn't know about them due to your upbringing. she gets so mad when i point this out, or when i show her the vt100-aa that is a bit younger than her but not by much.

@efi shows up with a Ti Nspire CX II Cas calculator like you could just wreck them. Ah my little pocket device does algebra by itself and not just tiny algebra but can factor expand massive polynomials in mere ms. Genuinely the speed at which my nspire is able to do things compared to my old ti-89... it's not even comparable.

ari,

@puppygirlhornypost "Your society must be so advanced!! What do you even do with all of this processing power??"

"yeah so we call these catgirls"

puppygirlhornypost,
@puppygirlhornypost@transfem.social avatar

@ari i hornypost on the internet with a cpu that would have ended ww2 if it was available back then. i do it gladly too

puppygirlhornypost,
@puppygirlhornypost@transfem.social avatar

@ari no i don't mean just breaking cryptography i mean running simulations of things like the manhattan project, or aerodynamics such as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq7TA3kogak

ari,

@puppygirlhornypost do you think world war 2 could have happened if they had catgirls

puppygirlhornypost,
@puppygirlhornypost@transfem.social avatar

@ari no maybe if we gave all the really angry world leaders cute fuzzy catgirls it could’ve gone differently
