So I bought a gigantic negi and leek (both from China) to prove a point.
They look similar except the negi are a bunch of hollow green O's like straws whereas leeks are just layered green leaves, like peeling an onion.
The negi when cut smells similar to onion 🧅 and even has the sulphuric compounds to cause tears to form :ablobcatnodmeltcry: Leeks aren't as onioney, and have strong vegetal notes.
