I really dislike the button reading "Publish" when sending a DM on Mastodon.

It always makes me question if I'm really sending a DM or if I'm accidentally "publishing" something on my regular feed.

m0xee,

@fribbledom Use a simple CSS injection to replace it with an elephant passing wind and avoid the confusion😅

@fribbledom this is a great observation. And a lesson in UX. There are a number of things like this with Mastodon that I’d love to fix.

egnun,

@fribbledom Well, "Publish" might actually be the better option here. Because depending on whether one is sending a Toot to another Mastodon/Pleroma or Friendica server, is quite a difference here. On Mastodon/Pleroma direct messages should only be seen by the recipient. But Friendica has implemented DMs differently. So if one was sending a supposedly "private" message there, the serer would treat it as a regular, public post.

@fribbledom dms on mastodon are terrible. I refuse to use them. Also, since anyone can run a mastodon server they really should implement end-to-end encrypted dms

@fribbledom Every time I DM, since it's the same flow as regular toots, I'm worried I tooted publicly. Drives me nuts.

@fribbledom Same here!

@fribbledom I always think ofDMs on Mastodon as Toots that only the mentioned people can see. And suddenly the word "Publish" makes sense. And as they are not encrypted but readable by anyone getting acces to them it is a kind of publishing....

@fribbledom This is honestly my biggest criticism of Mastodon and the larger ActivityPub scene. Neither were designed with any kind of real privacy in mind.

@fribbledom I'm personally not a fan of overloading the post UI to handle DMs even if the underlying mechanism is the same. Modal UIs in general kinda suck.

kboyd,
@kboyd@phpc.social avatar

@fribbledom this is where the word "Post" would make sense, because it's like you're nailing a note to a fencepost and waiting for them to pass by.

Um, I mean, mailing them a letter. Yeah, that's the ticket.

It would be nice if @signalapp could hook into ActivityPub somehow to provide robust secure DMs (ideally without revealing phone numbers unless desired to do so).

ardgedee,

@fribbledom It seems like a good time to repost this: https://octodon.social/@ardgedee/109349179630173224

@fribbledom glad I’m not the only one! Half my DMs, I immediately delete and then redraft just because I had a moment of “crap, did I just toot that publicly?” Which also shows I don’t DM much

dmoonfire,

@fribbledom Octodon thankfully changed it to "Oot!" so I don't have that.

@fribbledom probably the most ergonomic part of DMs as you can’t rely on then actually being private

gudenau,
@gudenau@fosstodon.org avatar

@fribbledom They recently removed the terminology "direct message", they don't seem to want people thinking they are secure.

fribbledom,
@fribbledom@mastodon.social avatar

@gudenau

I understand, and that part actually makes sense to me. I still think the button should read "Send" instead of "Publish" however, as it's much more appropriate.

I always have to double check I'm really sending a DM, and that little change would eliminate all my confusion.

VoxofGod,

@fribbledom And how it ends up on your timeline really freaks me out

gmcgath,
@gmcgath@liberdon.com avatar

@fribbledom I consider it a useful reminder that DMs are only minimally protected against reading by third parties.

melindrea,
@melindrea@wandering.shop avatar

@fribbledom I agree. There is a bit of a visual cue (on the website--I don't use any apps), but a "send" instead of "[padlock] publish" would be quite nice.

yngmar,
@yngmar@social.tchncs.de avatar

@fribbledom Some instances have rejected this terrible change. My button still says "Toot!", as they all used to.

bavcreampuff,

@fribbledom Same, I always have to triple check.
