Sorely tempted to subscribe to Amazon Prime just so I can watch “I'm a Virgo”. Is it possible to unsubscribe later, or do Amazon chew your arm off if you try?

@gregeganSF I checked out "I'm a Virgo" based on this toot. Interesting show, and with it's deeply anti-capitalist themes, I'm shocked that Amazon of all companies funded it.

Thanks for the heads up on it, I probably wouldn't have known it existed otherwise.

Deadloch was uniquely funny and kind while also being a deeply symbolic piece of work.

@quaithe Because piracy is theft, and I am not a thief.

quaithe,

Amazon steals from the society much more than you could ever steal from them. There is also a lot of research pointing to piracy increasing profits for non-mainstream media over all, because they proliferate by word of mouth.

If you don’t want to give Amazon your money, don’t give them your money, but then you are not entitled to watch the show. Everything else is just specious rationalisation.

The creator of “I’m A Virgo” chose to work with Amazon, and they paid for the production, so they are fully entitled to be paid by anyone who wants to watch it. Those are the terms that the creator agreed.

That's the point of view of someone who hasn't realized how bad the world is and where it is going and I'm actually very disappointed.

gregeganSF,
@gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@quaithe Ah, thank goodness there are a few heroes like you, who will save us all from the evils of capitalism by bravely watching whatever you like while contributing nothing to the cost of the production.

quaithe,

@gregeganSF

Not sure what you're trying to achieve by this tone except that I deeply regret actually buying your books now.

@gregeganSF It's not too bad. Give Deadloch a go while you're at it.

@gregeganSF It’s pretty easy tbh, you just need to get through 3-4 screens.
And if you get charged for the next period, you can ask their support to rescind this, I’ve done this before.

irving,

@gregeganSF You have to unsubscribe via a special mechanical box they physically deliver to you, but at least it arrives quickly.

@gregeganSF it's possible to cancel, but the internal codename for the cancellation process is "Iliad"

@gregeganSF I signed up via the iOS app and accidentally canceled at some point, so it’s definitely possible :-)

@gregeganSF I think the unsubscribe button is one pixel wide, it is invisible, hidden in a subpage five layers deep, and blinks around the page at irregular intervals.
So "technically" it is easy to unsubscribe: just press the button.

@j_bertolotti @gregeganSF ... in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.'

@gregeganSF I accidentally subscribed to it once while trying to buy something (they have a few versions of the checkout process, and I clicked the wrong button).

I had to complete the subscription process (giving a credit card to bill) before it would let me unsubscribe. Once I'd done that, the subscription remained active for the remainder of the month.

It's worth keeping in mind that the free trial will roll over into a monthly subscription, which is 50% more expensive than a yearly subscription.

@gregeganSF So far I had 100% success rate by not trying to cancel, but complaining about content and having customer support cancel for me...

@gregeganSF They use slightly confusing wording, nav, and button colour dark patterns for cancellation, but nothing too entangling

CommonMugwort,

@gregeganSF You can do it. They try to trick you, but if you persist in reading before clicking it’s okay. I do it once a year or so, get the free/cheap month, and duck out.

The hardest thing is remembering the right time to do it, if the other half's experience is general.
