Starting my first re-read of Gibson's "Agency." not far in and just had to check the publication date. January 2020. I see why I haven't picked it up again. It's like gazing into my own open wound.

still. I barely recall anything about it. Already seeing some distillation of the usual Gibsonian "what if an alright person had unlimited funding and a project to focus on." Agency. the ability to act.

I'm rewatching Dropout's Game Changer from the start and it's wild to me how much of my media landscape has this incredible Pandemic Scar across it. It's almost like there was a nuclear war and a couple years of shows just have horribly radiation-damaged footage and at the start of that people acknowledge it and then later on they just...lean in.

ChateauErin,
@ChateauErin@mastodon.social avatar

I've said before that Dropout's particular flavor of parasocial whatever is unreasonably effective and this is doubly true for Game Changer, where Sam runs a game show for his friends (which is sometimes borderline torturous) and then gives them prizes. Sometimes very nice prizes. In addition to paying them for showing up

I spotted this conspicuous geographic feature, and was confused as to whether someone built a moat around an invisible castle an hour west of Chicago or if the level designer responsible for this part of northern Illinois was simply running out of ideas, but no, I zoomed in and it turns out it's just one of Fermilab's particle accelerators.

I know criticizing C is like, yesterday's pastime, and the syntax I'm criticizing is probably from the seventies, but I hate in particular that the pointer-type's syntax is

type *name

no no no. That contains an address. How else do I get things to contain an address? the & operator, not the * operator

am I dumb or is C dumb or both

Will the end of the Delta rocket mean an increased price for Centaur and SLS? The Delta program had continuous funding irrespective of launch to support things like the liquid hydrogen supply chain. Centaur is a much smaller rocket, and SLS launches, to a first approximation, never. So who is paying to maintain all the hydrogen trucks, tanks, liquefiers?

Hydrogen itself is a fairly common industrial chemical, but my impression (maybe wrong) is that liquid hydrogen is rare and weird.

ChateauErin,
@ChateauErin@mastodon.social avatar

@wikkit would you mind if I ask exactly your question on the Space Exploration StackExchange? I'd credit this toot, and let you know if it gets an answer.

ChateauErin,
@ChateauErin@mastodon.social avatar

@wikkit sorry to say that I'm way too lazy to check for a license and would probably ask you every time, but I hope not to ask you often enough to bother you. :D

question is up here https://space.stackexchange.com/q/65928/11262

ChateauErin,
@ChateauErin@mastodon.social avatar

@wikkit per this answer https://space.stackexchange.com/a/65947/11262 and last year's Air Products press release about their new LH2 contract with NASA https://www.airproducts.com/company/news-center/2023/03/0327-air-products-wins-nasa-contracts-for-liquid-hydrogen-supply , it sounds like the liquid hydrogen economy is actually growing in anticipation of other use-cases coming online. I have my doubts about LH2 for trucks and planes, but that sounded like a decent amount of LH2 tons-per-day production coming up.

I've been criticizing git nonstop for months on here but I really do love it. I've been using it for probably 13 years, I'm used to all of the warts that I run into regularly, and I don't think I've had a major problem with it anytime in the last 7 years or so.

not to minimize all of the very real problems that people have with git but I really do believe that it's possible to use git successfully

ChateauErin,
@ChateauErin@mastodon.social avatar

@b0rk I forget if you've ever said if there's another version control system you prefer. For me, my prior version control experiences (...Clearcase...sigh...) weren't really great and Git has fit my own mental models well enough that I'm not tempted to use anything else until submodules come up, and even then I wouldn't know what to switch to

I'm talking to a journalist in a bit about NASA's new "space sustainability strategy" and this one sentence from the abstract seems to sum it up:

"Given the substantial upfront expenditures required to develop and deploy remediation capabilities and the potential delay in receiving benefits, these motivations do not appear to be sufficient to incentivize immediate action"

I'm going to have to read this more carefully, but did NASA just say they don't care about orbit?!
