Anyone out there prepared to recommend a business that sells custom-made curtains online (in Australia)?

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@luciedigitalni I bought curtains online from an Australian store - they were made in and shipped from China though. They are exactly as ordered and took about a week and a half to arrive. https://www.quickfitblindsandcurtains.com.au/

Being an adult means realizing that while you love cat-sitting, having an actual cat will not work for you, because OMG, a week and there is so much cat hair! Everywhere!

@vicgrinberg now add to the hair: rolling around in dirt and barbed seed pods outside, then running inside 🤦

Is there a command that can do timezone conversion on timestamps? Ideally through a pipe?

I want to convert syslogs in UTC to localtime (based on $TZ env).

cat /var/log/syslog | tz2local

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@mattcen @phs Now all we need is a perk version too :-)

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@phs @mattcen I mean, it can be done in bash. It's just that the one-liner will be a page long ;-)

It was so bright it cast a shadow at this stage.

Today I'll be introducing X-ray astronomy (in German!) to a bunch of medical doctors at the RöKo (Röntgenkongress https://www.roentgenkongress.de/roeko-wiesbaden/) Wiesbaden as an invited highlight talk. Kinda a fun audience and very different from a normal one 😳

@vicgrinberg the hardest part was to make the supernova go off once the patient was positioned in front of the telescope? ;-)

If I wanted a traumatic brain injury, I’d simply run Kubernetes at home

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@jpm Why did you choose to add that “at home” qualifier to your statement?

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@jpm Pretty sure you can talk to Workcover about compensation if work makes you use kubernetes.

I do not need to buy the “holy trinity” of f2.8 Nikon zoom lenses

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@jpm You do not. Probably the 14-24 only if you like taking images of the milky way or trees. The others yes definitely.

Mind you, I have the Sigma version of the 70-200 and for daytime photography that is completely fine.

Rather than get the 24-70 I spent some money on a second hand sigma art 35mm f1.4 instead and welp that’s a nice lens :-)

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@jpm Do you have a 2000mm prime lens yet for astrophotography? ;-)

Stayed up a little later than planned last night to wait until galaxy NGC3621 was low enough in the sky that my telescope could point at it without breaking the camera.

Marked out in the second image is supernova SN2024ggi. A star that blew up about 22 million years ago, it was discovered a few days ago when the light from that explosion finally reached us.

With thanks to @CosmicRami for pointing this out 🙂

The big telescope did point well, but tracking with the Alt-Az mount isn’t accurate enough to do long exposures. So unfortunately that means noisy images.

Guess I will be saving up for a new GEM huh?

Here’s the weekend haul; the horse head nebula, the sombrero galaxy, the crab nebula and thors helmet / the wild duck nebula.

Despite the accidental self-sabotage, 70 of so 30 second photos of the Eta Carinae nebula (NGC 3372) still contain enough data to bring out faint details. I don’t think I’ve photographed the background dust in this area before (other than the coal sack and doodad). I can only imagine what 300 exposures would’ve shown. Oh well, next time.

I just remembered how Microsoft tried to take ownership of Email by having Outlook encode the entire message (text, body, attachments, all of it) into their own proprietary format that other software couldn't read.

So you would get an email and it would have headers, a subject line, but no text and a single attachment called "winmail.dat"

And the only way to open it was to save the message as a .eml file, install Microsoft Outlook, and open it there. Or (if you were a quitter who likes to let bullies tell you what to do) you could just switch to Outlook and never have that problem again but instead BE the problem because now YOUR friends have to deal with it.

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@uastronomer or you could make your MTA block those emails with a rude error message.

My solar panels have taught me some basic astronomy.

I'd noticed that, in summer, I was getting a lot less power than I'd expected. I had expected Summer to be a power bonanza, because the sun is higher in the sky and so much brighter, and also because it rises earlier and sets later, meaning more sunlight on the panels.

But instead I found there was a period of about an hour after sunrise and before sunset where I got very little power indeed.

Why? Because in Summer, the sun describes an arc of more than 180º across the sky! So even if you had the most carefully aimed array, on a mast to be above all trees and buildings, the Sun would actually shine on the BACK of the panels when it first rises, before moving around to the other side for most of the day, and then again moving behind them before setting.

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@uastronomer It’s because the stupid front room chimney overshadows my panels!

Somebody in the neighbourhood just got a new alarm system. They're still in the "False alarms are a small price to pay, better safe than sorry" honeymooon phase, which usually lasts a few months before they decide "Feckit, we'll only arm it when we go on holiday so that we don't have to hear the *&#$ thing every 2 hours while we're trying to sleep."

Really rooting for the neighbourhood baddies to steal their alarm.

It kinda blows my mind that macOS's Contacts.app still has so many ancient contact methods in its dropdown. I acknowledge I'm still running macOS Ventura (13.6.4), but even so, ICQ, MSN, and probably several others are, if not obsolete, definitely out of favour. Ideally Matrix and some other newer protocols (Discord?) should be added.

cafuego,
@cafuego@misanthrope.social avatar

@mattcen Interestingly on iOS (current) it seems to query installed apps for IM and Social Media entries.
