[On the IMAX print of Oppenheimer. Good grief. At least he didn’t demand doubling the frame rate ...]

"It costs around $80,000 and weighs 260 kilograms; without the upgrade, the print would have fallen off the edges of the film platter.

"Previously, Nolan's Interstellar was the longest you could run at 170 minutes … Nolan didn't want to compromise his vision of Oppenheimer and edit it down, so he said to IMAX 'you need to extend the equipment'.

@gregeganSF you can see in one of the photos there's a tablet on the wall with a picture of a Palm. It seems that the IMAX projectors were controlled by Palm software with a serial(?) interface. Instead of replacing that with Palms being obsolete, they now run them on an emulator!

will_harris,

@gregeganSF Nolan missed an opportunity to revive the lost art of the intermission.

@gregeganSF The article does mention it, but this seems like a fairly niche problem given that nearly all IMAX theatres are digital.

@gregeganSF Presumably it still fits on the hard drive of the digital projectors just fine though...

@gregeganSF

Is this going to be the first IMAX full-frontal nudity?

@gregeganSF is Barbenheimer a thing in Australia? I think I'd honestly be slightly more tempted to see Barbie in IMAX than I would Oppenheimer (but I'd rather watch any movie from the comfort of home really) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTT-q_wVyz8

@ChateauErin It’s, err, a word people in the Australian media use because people in the media elsewhere have used it.

I wouldn’t pay to see Oppenheimer in IMAX, but I might see it at the cinema. I used to go to the movies with friends every fortnight as a social thing, but COVID shut that down and we haven’t resumed the habit.

@gregeganSF

Are we just going to ignore the fact that the projectionist in this article is named Mr. Booty?

@gregeganSF

Is Oppenheimer the kind of movie a lot of people are going to watch in IMAX?

gregeganSF,
@gregeganSF@mathstodon.xyz avatar

@billyjoebowers

For the IMAX screenings in Australia, normal adult tickets are A$43, premium seats A$64. I can’t say I’m all that tempted just to get to feel like Cillian Murphy’s dermatologist.
