People who fade out here, you think it's usually cause they get bored? If so, is that just an inevitable side effect of asking people to "be the algorithm"?

shootfilmridesteel,

@misc I find the combination of “ you can vote with your feet” and “ change everything you are doing to confirm to my personal idea of how it should be done” results in a lot of leaving.

@misc Good question and interesting discussion so far. I suspect there are lots of reasons and that they vary depending on what people like about/need in a social media platform, as well as whether their friends moved/stayed here.

@design_law That seems right. I wish there was a way to reach people who've left - best one can hope for with this is speculation and maybe some people who are on the verge of leaving... (cue the ole schematic of an airplane with bullet holes)

@misc @design_law since at least 2016, Twitter was an endless shitpile of political fights, the main character of the day repeated every day, ambient friend content and the excuse that you could be on there “for work.” It is deliberately and algorithmically designed to be very addictive.

I find I’m on here in waves. Sometimes a lot and sometimes I don’t think about it for a week at a time. In that way it’s like everything else in my life that’s not family or work.

BobWilliams,

@misc Maybe instance hoppers and the effort of restarting or migrating?

@misc

People don't fade out here, I drive them out.
There can be only one.

@misc They forget to follow 500 or 1000 people and then wonder where the content is. Might be better if the default view for new users is their local instance timeline just to get them started.

misc,
@misc@mastodon.social avatar

@franktaber Yeah... we need ways to help people find a lot of people to follow, fast.

@misc @franktaber I've been here a couple of weeks now. My first interaction with Mastodon was the very generous mod team at union.place boosting my introductory toot, and then many others did the same, as well as advising me to find followers. I therefore followed everyone who boosted me.

I'm loving the content I'm now seeing. And I'm seeing it because the mods then the community lifted me up and helped me to see.

I now try to boost every I see to pay forward the generosity.

To be clear, I'm not bored, but that's contingent on all you all sticking around!
