What is your favorite text-based game written in #BASIC?

Rules:

  1. Any dialect of BASIC is valid.
  2. "Text" can include extended characters in common use in the 8-bit era.
  3. #interactiveficiton or #IF is valid, but the scope of the question is wider than that.
  4. No sprites or graphical tiles.
  5. Modern games that meet this criteria are valid.

#retroggames #retrocomputing #retrodev

@profoundlynerdy I still have a soft spot for "Hunt the Wumpus".

@fnordius I'm not familiar with that one.

@profoundlynerdy I still have the code somewhere, from "101 BASIC Computer Games", edited by Dave Ahl

@fnordius The #BASIC source code has been posted online, with minor necessary bug fixes.

This repo has ports to many popular memory safe languages, including #Python, #Perl, and #Lua among others.

The point is to help others learn to code using these easy-to-read references. It also helps the coders sharpen their skills, because porting code between dissimilar languages is not as easy as it may seem.

@cohomologyisFUN @fnordius 🤦‍♂️ yes.

Sorry about that.

@fnordius @profoundlynerdy I'd go with Hunt the Wumpus too. I implemented six games in Tiny BASIC a few years ago, and Hunt the Wumpus is the one I go back and play by choice.

@cyningstan @fnordius Are encounters randomized?

@profoundlynerdy @fnordius Yes, although in the original spec Tiny BASIC version you need to give it a seed (no random number generator in the original Tiny BASIC spec).
