The Water War of 2065 had been over for almost 50 years. Gunnery Sgt Mathis reflected on his time in during the battles in Arizona, Nevada and Oregon.
“So much lost. So many lives… needlessly lost,” he thought as he gazed out at the ocean and cliffs near his home in northern California.
The tide of the war changed when he and resistance fighters wrestled control away from the corporations by using their own Ai against them. Ironically, it was the Ai that had been the problem all along.
Unfortunately, humans are a species of hubris. They thought they could control Ai. This time it would be different. But the military aircraft in the distance told a different story.

He could see it all in his head, the Trevbolan moon would collapse sometime tonight around 2057 hours, the moon's planet would follow within minutes, then the system's star would be sucked in at tremendous, inexorable, exponential speeds, speeds that defined the Theory of Relativity. by tomorrow afternoon the entire sector would enter the black hole. That was just the beginning; within a week, Earth Standard Time, the galaxy would be consumed - he hadn't been able to calculate how long the universe had, but he suspected only a couple of months. That's right, 346 times. Once a month, when the moons are at perigee. I've tried it 346 times and it hasn't worked yet but I'm not insane. I just have to get the time right on this watch, so I know exactly when to jump, and I'll be able to step right off this rock and onto the closest moon, easy as peas on Sunday.
