The best British Sci-fi show ever returns next month - with a difference

Shows about time travel are as old as well... time. But there's only one that's had thirteen different actors play the same lead character Doctor Who. And now we know when the Fourteenth Doctor will make their debut- hang on. He looks familiar...

That's right, to celebrate 60 years of our favourite Timelord, David Tennant is back in the TARDIS. I could not be more excited, especially as he will be teaming up with Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) once again. Worryingly, I've officially reached the age where my childhood is classed as nostalgic

But enough about me, if you don't have a TARDIS you need me to tell you when the three specials with the dream team will air, and strangely enough for Who fans, where.

Let’s pretend we never had a female Dr and go back to our midst successful version

fsniper,

Repeat after me: Doctor regenerating to a woman was never the issue.

But bad writing, bad acting, forced relationships, killing the established lore, being boring .. These are the worse sins.

Kyle,

Thank you. Whittaker was fine and very doctor-y. It was just a terrible time to be a doctor, as the writing team, made a considerable amount of missteps.

The Doctor regenerating as a woman was never the problem. I think Jody had good Doctor energy, she could’ve been great, but the writing was utter shite.

And the terrible writing started in Capaldi’s run already. It simply progressively got worse…

You mispelled Blake's 7

val,

Was going to come in here to say the same thing until I remembered what the modern Red Dwarf episodes are like.

TubeTalkerX,

Well next month it will be cold outside…

Son_of_dad,

Am I being trolled when people call dr who the best sci Fi show? I’ve seen a handful of episodes and I find it godawful, cheap, tacky, cringe. I feel like it’s a show that stays relevant through nostalgia, but it’s not actually very good.

reddig33,

I wouldn’t call modern Who the best ever. Some of it is downright awful. Classic who was low budget and cheesy, but it had heart. I’d rank Blake’s 7 above modern Who.

accideath,

Doctor Who is always a product of its time and thus inconsistent. The first 4 series (of new who, not classic who) have a cheesy, low budget, very mid '00s charm, while series 5-10 are much grander in presentation and scale, typical for the 2010s, etc. With ever changing showrunners, teams, writers and cast, the show always feels a little different when you watch sth from another era. And every era has its mindblowingly amazing episodes and every era has its duds. Some eras are a bit more prone to duds than others. The last three series have been rather subpar in the writing department, for example and I know a few people who stopped watching because of them.

I personally wouldn’t call Doctor Who the best SciFi show, it’s way too inconsistent for that, even within a single series. But at its best it’s amazing and doesn’t need to hide behind the other grand SciFi shows

paddirn,

It’s inconsistent, but there are some really really great episodes and story arcs in there. I actually couldn’t stand Tennant when I first started going through Dr Who, but he grew on me through his run to where I honestly missed him when he left. Matt Smith though seemed good from the get-go. I actually haven’t caught up with the show since Capaldi had taken over, mostly because whatever streaming option I was using stopped carrying it.

At times Dr Who just gets silly and slapstick, with like stupid fart jokes happening during an alien invasion and all the goddamn stupid Christmas episodes. But then you have something like “Blink”, which is one of the greatest episodes ever (ironically, an episode that The Doctor barely even appears in). There is some really great writing and acting in there, but it’s unfortunately mixed in with alot of crap.

It’s weird that they’re making such a big deal about Donna Noble showing up again though, when she was probably one of the worst companions in the show. I hated every moment she was on screen.

fsniper,

Donna is probably one of the best if not the best companian.

accideath,

Nah, Donna was amazing, especially the amazing chemistry Tennant and Tate had on screen. But I can see how she’s not everyone’s cup o‘ tea.

Decoy321,

David Tennant is the fuckin man!!!
