What is there to teach? It's conversational. If you can write coherently, you can use GPTs. Someone in the English department should leverage "AI" hype to get more funding.

nous,

Expectations and limitations. IMO it is important to teach people what it actually does and that it can generate false statements as well as what sorts of questions are more likely to lead to false statements. It is a tool, and like any tool it has incorrect ways to use it. Even if it seems simple from the outset.

sincle354,

Oh shit, I remember taking a short course on research in college. The necessity of parsing your sources were a big topic, with an entire section on Wikipedia and social media. AI is gonna be the biggest revision to that course and academia in general yet.

wagesj45, in Sites scramble to block ChatGPT web crawler after instructions emerge

As a thought experiment, imagine an online business declaring that it didn't want its website indexed by Google in the year 2002—a self-defeating move when that was the most popular on-ramp for finding information online.

This is exactly what will happen as people rely more and more on these things for "searching", since search by the two biggest search engines (Google and Bing) are both so gummed up with SEO spam and ads (my god, the number of ads) that people just start asking AI for the increasingly accurate answers without the bullshit. Eventually the AI solutions will become enshittified as well, but not before huge blows will be dealt to both search engines and the sites that refuse to expose themselves. Google can probably weather it, but can a site like VentureBeat? I have severe doubts.

wagesj45, in EU AI Act: First regulation on artificial intelligence
wagesj45 avatar

Well, just had Google Bard summarize this for me, and it doesn't sound terrible. I like the tiered organization and limits it imposes (mostly). I don't mind the reporting requirements for training data. But if they're going to put requirements on the "high risk" category of AI to be transparent and explainable then those kinds of systems just might not exist for a good long while if they're going to incorporate neural networks. Unless explainability and transparency mean that you can explain how they're trained and the structure of the network. Otherwise the model weights will never really be explainable in a way that matters.

@stopthatgirl7 That's not even funny anymore. Edit: I meant its not funny what Twitter does, not the post itself. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Voli, in Twitter changed DM settings so users who don't pay for Twitter Blue can't message you

That… is a good thing, don’t have to get spams anymore.

Pons_Aelius,

Silently blocking DMs from people you wanted to be able to DM you is spam prevention?

Voli,

I am more talking from my own perspective of how I use Twitter.

Pons_Aelius,

So you left your DMs open to everyone?

Then got hit with spam?

OK. Your choice.

J12, in Bluesky allowed people to include the n-word in their usernames

Can someone clarify for me: is Bluesky owned by Twitter and Elon Musk?

phi1997,

It's owned by Jack Dorsey, co-founder of Twitter who sold Twitter to Elon Musk

J12,

theintercept.com/…/bluesky-owner-twitter-elon-mus….

Ok Dorsey doesn’t own Bluesky but Bluesky is apparently completely independent from Musk and Twitter which ultimately was all I was concerned with. Thank you.

Jumpinship, in Far-right figures, including Nazi supporters, anti-gay extremists, and white supremacists, are flocking to Threads

Its just free speech that nobody has to listen to, right? Lemmy has no ads anyways so what if there’s some nonsense mixed in? I doubt it would outnumber the people who want good content to prevail.

EmperorHenry,

EXACTLY! All of these people complaining about bigots "everywhere" where are they? I don't know, because I've never gone looking for them and I've never clicked on any of their profiles. The only time I ever hear what bigots say is through the filter of people making fun of them and de-bunking their arguments.

For all the people that downvoted me. CLICK AWAY FROM THE THINGS YOU DON'T LIKE. No one's making you look at it!

They are on platforms like reddit and Twitter, harassing trans people. And once Threads joins the fediverse, they will crawl over here too.

Sp00ky94, in Elon Musk Really Broke Twitter This Time - The Atlantic

Twitter isn’t dying and isn’t broken. I have also learned the Atlantic is hit and miss. The users and content is still on Twitter. The people going to Mastodon are the niche group of techies. Mastodon isn’t for your casual or average twitter user which is a majority of twitter.

I think news and ads ruined social media today. I do miss the days of MySpace when people used to log on, hangout and message each other. You used to connect with your friends online. Today, social media isn’t really used like that anymore.

QHC,
QHC avatar

Social media platforms die in stages. That "niche group of techies" are a big part of why Twitter became what it did in the first place. It's not an insignificant group.

Twitter was never consistently profitable and these moves aren't helping, and there's definitely not going to be a savior investor after Musk. The real question is how long the company can survive, even if it remains popular in general, as that was already a big question before the ownership change.
