The reason why and are incompatible is that Mastodon is a community, and Threads is a market. That's it.

It's not big Fed vs small Fedi. It's not platforms vs protocols.

It's communities vs markets.

Communities are supportive and markets are extractive. Communities answer to those who must live with decisions made. Markets answer to money.

And wouldn't you know it, those contrasting forces influence people's behaviors, goals, and motivations for engaging with others.

@fromjason

very much this. I've said for many years that for-profit social media will probably be seen in a similar way as we look at lead paint now

@fromjason as a person who avidly used threads and am starting to also use mastodon, I really dont see much difference except i find it much harder to follow the things/ people I like on mastodon. I am not saying by any means that mastodon is worse or threads is better or vice versa, they both have their uses and both have their needs. I wish I could find a community to get behind but I just don’t understand how mastodon could be better nor threads better than each other.

@kingtrunks @fromjason

the feeling of community is stronger on small fedi instances, especially ones that focus on a shared interest, location, etc.

@fromjason Isn’t Mastodon on the same path towards being a market, just sans algorithm? Sure, it’s not an ad platform (yet?), but I’m not seeing much actual community-building here and virtually everyone is on one large server (too big/diverse to be much of a “community”). It’s not positioned as being for “communities,” but instead is a way to avoid the rent-seeking platforms.

When/if it reaches critical mass, won’t the same brands/companies follow + it’ll be just another distribution channel?

@rscottjones I suspect your view of the Fediverse may be sufficiently filtered by the server you are on.

Here's the communities-first model that the guy that runs yours used to promote before he declared himself "CEO of Mastodon" and sold out to big tech: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPSbNdBmWKE

@downey
Mastodon is not the Fediverse! Change the Network if you think, your instance filters the Fediverse.
