One thing that I think did well is that — they were able to bring over large chunks of communities over from to Threads.

(They did it by pulling in users from Instagram to Threads https://mastodon.social/@reiver/110665875303226142 )

I think that this is one challenges the Fediverse has had, that affects retention.

One of the draws of a social-media network is the individuals and the communities that are there.

Another thing that I think did well is that — they let you follow people BEFORE they (also) joined Threads.

They did it by identifying these people by their ID.

But you could imagine this working with other IDs, too.

@reiver that only works if you can verify ownership of the ids. Easy to do when you control them. But otherwise what do you do? "Tweet this code to confirm that you own this Twitter handle"?

@schizanon

Regarding:
"Tweet this code to confirm that you own this Twitter handle"

Some services do that.

Or look at your profile.

Or get you to login using that account.

@reiver still, none of those are necessary when you own both ids.

The Fediverse software would have to be modified, but —

You could express interest in following someone based on some ID they had — e-mail address, phone number, Twitter handle, etc.

A new user would then have to "verify" that the "own" that ID.

And then the software would auto-follow them based on those who expressed interest.

@reiver @SrRochardBunson to me, that just sounds like a convoluted "sign up here to follow your favorite content creators" except one at a time. Maybe someday someone can figure out the logistics. I fear that this doesn't exist yet outside of the Fediverse and might not until other Corporate Social Media sites start to play ball.

I'm sure some people will probably want to follow "creators" and "influencers".

But I was (also) thinking about the mutuals I have on other platforms.

Some are here already. Most aren't.

If any of them joined the Fediverse — I want to follow them.

Right now I'd have to keep on checking to see if they join.

It would be easier if I could just express interest in following them when they join, and the software would auto-follow them for me whenever they actually do.

I guess that's a reminder that we should not judge the success of Threads by membership, since all Instagram users were magically made members by default.

It's not as successful as my own organization, AEFOM (Automatically Enrolled Friends Of Me), which boasts 3 billion users. I made the very smart move of automatically granting membership to all citizens of China, and India, and whatever the third most populous country in the world is.

    I was thinking something similar.

In the past I searched the Fediverse for some people I am mutuals with on other platforms.

    Some I found. Most I didn't.

But I haven't re-searched for most of them (on the Fediverse) recently.

With something like this, I could express my interest in following them whenever they join (without necessarily having to re-search for them every few months).
