Another reason to add to your photos, basically, anywhere, is that, yes, there are sighted people that disable all images in their browsers because it's faster to browse.

potungthul,
@potungthul@toot.io avatar

@weirdwriter

I think my case is far more common: I, a sighted person, look at the image, and I don't know what I'm looking at.

Sometimes I think I know what I'm looking at, but then the alt text tells me the intent of the person who posted is not at all what I thought.

E.g. I think I see a beautiful photo of a sunset behind mountains, but the alt text says: "wildfires are turning the afternoon sun red". Then I think: Good thing there was .

potungthul,
@potungthul@toot.io avatar

@ChasMusic
@weirdwriter

Agreed that that is the role of captions. Still, often will reveal the intention behind the picture, something the writer had assumed was obvious, but not to me.

Also, often it is hard to get alt text to describe every single aspect of the picture. Knowing what the writer did describe lets me know where to focus my attention.
E.g. "class photo. Everybody is frowning" is very different from "class photo. Everybody is wearing red", even if it's the same photo.

A few extra seconds of your time it takes to add a good image description can really improve someone's day.

"To a totally blind person like me it means a lot to have a picture in my mind of your images, especially the animal pics."

"I don't know what it is, but as a blind user it's making me emotional to be able to actually interact with content."

So, I wanted to ask, especially to our blind users:

Sometimes an image is missing alt text, so I add it, and I add the tag

Does that help people find alt text, added by somebody else, that's not actually attached to the image posted?

Or do people find that there's no alt text, and then don't look in the replies for ?

I just hope my efforts aren't wasted.

Don't feel you have to share anything you don't want. Tell us as much or as little about yourself as you want. Some people just lurk and never say anything.

You don't have to "maintain" an online presence. Respond or not respond as you wish. Take a few months break and then come back, if you like. The only thing is, some instances might go down so just check to see if squawk.social is still there every few months or so.

This is years after the government of Munich made the switch, although then they switched back, and then it became a political thing.

I remember when Munich reported: yeah, switching to was more expensive due to "Total Cost of Ownership", accounting for the cost of switching itself.
Microsoft said: I told you so! So now you'll switch back, right?
Munich: no, now that we've switched, it's cheaper to stay with Linux!

Then politics happened, blah blah blah.

Oh, that was absolutely deliberate. In fact, my first three guesses have no letters in common.
After the first word there were too many possibilities, so my second guess I knew would be wrong but it would tell me which letters are in the secret word. Knowing none of the letters appeared was a big help (since the first two guesses cover the 10 most common letters) and I narrowed it down to four possibilities. The third eliminated all possibilities but one.

Fun stuff!

After the disruption from the nightly build on Monday, I began experimenting with both @phanpy and @elk, alternate Web interfaces for Mastodon.

While is quite nice with always-available mouse-based back navigation, it doesn't seem to support either multi-column views or auto-refreshing timelines.

So, is a much better fit for my use case. However, it suffers the same limitation sorting notifications as the current unfixed nightly build, i.e. no quick-access filter bar.
