There has been a lot of teeth-gnashing and angst over the fall of #twitter, but from some of the latest news, I think we will have to start thinking about a much bigger problem: the fall of #Google.

The #twitterMigration and the #redditMigration will be child’s play compared with a #GoogleMigration.

I’ve been looking for my own google alternatives, but everything I’ve found so far is either too complicated or too expensive.

@FlockOfCats I search exclusively on DuckDuckGo now. Moved my personal domain from Google workspaces to ICloud custom domain… all of 20 min to do it. Still have and use a Gmail account but access it via Outlook, both desktop and mobile apps.

@FlockOfCats I've been using a super basic Zoho plan for a while. It's $35/year. Since it's for my domain, I can set up extra mailboxes, etc... basically all the stuff I used to do by hand 😅

@FlockOfCats I’ve been paying for Kagi and it’s been great so far but I do often wonder if $10 a month makes sense

NakjiKiss3,

@FlockOfCats Huh? Google just received an excellent Q2 earnings result. Where's it going?

@NakjiKiss3 google proposed a bunch of sketchy changes for Chrome (basically, DRM for the web to prevent adblocking) and, in my opinion, showing way too many YouTube ads and enshittifying their search.

Ewwww. AdGuard makes their sites bearable. Web DRM for Google is a dealbreaker for me.

@FlockOfCats Depends on how much you rely? Mail, easy to move. Docs, a bit harder, especially that everything else online sucks. search, alternatives exist, youtube: biggest problem, there is none.

@gullevek maybe I’m not typical, but I’m finding it hard to replace 2 users, 2 email addresses, and at least 100 GB of storage total in a way that is simple and not crazy expensive

@gullevek I would love to just self host a mail/cloud storage solution, but my understanding is that self-hosted mail doesn’t get delivered. I would love to be wrong and hear any tips for solving the problem quickly and easily.

(If it’s not clear, I have to deal with two users. One is not tech savvy)

@LetsBuild @gullevek I have to deal with two users, one of whom has zero Mac knowledge 😢

@FlockOfCats No. Self hosted mail is dead. Glad I don’t care about mail personally anymore and Gmail is just an order confirmation inbox.

    drk0027,

@FlockOfCats @gullevek yo tengo correo selfhosted. Al principio fue un fastidio pero ahora funciona, tras mucho estudiar lo de dkim y otras cosas para que google escuche.
