I just realized that twitter barrier--apparently you need to be logged in now--also prevents people from seeing the emergency things like weather, earthquake, transit issues...
Those services have to leave there. They should have before anyway, but now it's not a public venue at all.
@mem_somerville This is why I've long objected, for example, to so many government bodies using Facebook for their announcements and streaming. This should all be on WCAG accessible publicly-owned sites.
It's time to start calling our political and public service representatives everywhere and make sure that they open their own server somewhere, maybe Mastodon, maybe some other technology but somewhere that's under public control, not the control of some billionaire.
@idoubtit@mem_somerville As long as people keep hanging on by their fingertips, two things happen: (a) it provides support and credibility to a site that doesn't deserve it any more; (b) it deprives sites that could use the extra members of support and growth. I don't miss Twitter since canceling it. It's easy. 😁
