bioemerl, in Today we celebrate no longer being responsible for the USA.

You can never totally divest from the fire you started friends. Even if it burns beyond your control.

Pons_Aelius,

You should be telling that to the Dutch, French and Spanish. All forgotten when it comes to the origins of the USA.

TeaHands, in Reminder it's Father's day tomorrow!
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Nothing, my dad sucks.

gorkx,

@TeaHands isn't that the mom who does the sucking? :P

@Ni

aeternum,

My dad ran out on us when i was a toddler. So yeah. That's how my father's day is gonna be.

Ni,
Ni avatar

Sorry to hear that, best to treat yourself extra kindly on sunday.

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

In the best traditions of British understatement....that's a bit of a bugger :(

gramo,

same here, I haven't heard from him in 8 years, not sure if he's still alive

Ni,
Ni avatar

Yeah it's so tricky, people seem to assume that you should have a great relationship with your parents, I certainly don't . Instead, treat yourself nicely this weekend!

e-ratic,
e-ratic avatar

My local football club I support had a father's day promotion, but a couple weeks beforehand they sent out an email allowing people to opt out. Really nice to see

Ni,
Ni avatar

Things like, allowing people to opt out, and accepting possible family estrangment needs to be normalised.

Bunjog,
Bunjog avatar

Agreed! Love for your parent should be earned not assumed.

Ni,
Ni avatar

Absolutely! We expect people to be reasonable and treat us with respect in all other relationships, why not with our families?

Ni,
Ni avatar

I'm with you here, I have a very complicated guilt filled relationship with my dad and often this time of year causes issues. I always think it's nice to focus on the positive father figures or even mentors in your life and reach out to show appreciation and know none of this is on you!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Eh it's been 11 years since he went off the rails so I'm pretty much over it. Sucks around his bday but on weekends like this I'm mostly just happy to not have to spend time and money on an awkward meal out like most people I know. Gonna lounge in pyjamas instead and nobody can even make me feel bad for it lol.

Ni,
Ni avatar

Honestly I admire you so much for this. I am feeling the guilt to go have to spend time with my dad over spending time with my partner (who is an amazing dad). As you say it's always awkward and toxic but still the guilt remains. Great that are prioritising yourself, have a wonderful weekend!

TeaHands,
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Well I hope that whatever you do, it's as bearable as possible and you get to come home to your awesome partner asap. I don't know your situation so can't comment any further on that, just remember your feelings in all of this matter too.

Ni,
Ni avatar

Thank you, yours to. Hope you have a lovely weekend!

Why would you want to take away the tiny bit of bitterness that tea has?

vext01,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Right. Tea is supposed to be bitter.

Try adding sugar to your gin and tonic to remove the lemon flavour…

Mango,

Hey you guys. I heard that liking bitter stuff means you’re much more likely to be a sociopath.

erusuoyera,

Ooh boy do I have some news for you about the ingredients of tonic water…

vext01,
@vext01@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

It’s already full of sugar, I know

Thank you for the interesting rabbithole! Less so for the joke 😉

MrsDoyle, in This morning I've finally accepted that I am getting old

I managed to stay “not old” until I hit 70. When I realised I have, at best, 20 good years left… well that was brutal.

So yeah, kid yourself you’re old lol. Are you even 60? Lightweight! Friday night? I’ll be finishing the latest Richard Osman Thursday Murder Club offering and knitting socks. Life on the edge, yessss.

lingh0e,

What a great example you are setting! See everyone? You can be an octogenarian while still gatekeeping things like an obnoxious 19 year old!

MrsDoyle,

Forgot to add the big old /s. I was JOKING, not gatekeeping. Also, I’m a septuagenarian thankyouverymuch.

To be fair, I will also be knitting socks while doing the Top of the Pops thing. We are so rock and roll 😎

guyrocket, in First morning of the year I had to put the heating on
guyrocket avatar

Midwest USA here. I heard about some housemates that had a contest every year to see how long they could wait to turn on the heat.

Piling on the layers on top of long underwear makes it possible.

QuinceDaPence,

I'll just throw on my near-freezing weather motorcycle gear. I only rode once in the full getup at 35F and had to pull out a layer.

guyrocket,
guyrocket avatar

Wow. My limit for riding is 50f. That must be some great gear.

QuinceDaPence,

Though not intended as motorcycle gear, the insulated overalls are probbaly the biggest improvement.

Upper part of my body was a Sedici Aventura with all vents closed, water/wind proof liner, insulating liner, and I can't remember what jacket I had on underneath but I think it was a Carhart. I ended up taking out the waterproof liner to get some breathability. Also keep in mind the coveralls insulate your core as well, just not shoulders or arms.

My face and neck were pretty cold though but I think I have a solution.

So that puts my cold weather ability in the 30s and hot weather at upper 80s, I can do 90s but it's not that enjoyable. I need some actual motorcycle pants instead of just jeans, and also a mesh jacket would be nice.

I'm in mostly Texas so this temperature range lets me ride year round except for the hottest part of the summer when I have to do it early in the morning.

guyrocket,
guyrocket avatar

I've seen pictures of guys riding all winter in northern states. In a snowmobile suit. Seems crazy to me to even try to ride on snow and/or ice. I'll pass on that.

QuinceDaPence,

Without studded tires I don't see how it's possible on ice. Snow, I feel like as long as it's not transitioning surfaces (ex: asphalt->snow or snowy dirt->snowy asphalt) I might be able to figure it out.

I should clarify, that coldest time I went was still a beautiful clear day and it warmed up later.

Only time I was truly miserable was when it was about 40F, on top of a mountain, and started raining unexpectedly (so no waterproof liner). I went back to the cabin as quick as I could and took hot bath.

HonoraryMancunian,

Just looked it up, his first name’s unknown (edit: oh I misread, thought you said just Dougal)

(Also it’s apparently spelt MacTout, whoops)

I always remembered the song starting “McDougal’s on his bagpipes…” All this time his name was MacTout? How did I never catch that? XD

HipPriest, in BBC Launches A Mastodon Instance - fediverse - Project Segfault Kbin

It's a 6 month experiment but I really hope it works out - it would be great to have an official BBC source on fedi. I've put it in another comment but virtually all news shared on here (and Mastodon from what I've seen of it) from British sources is from the BBC or The Guardian anyway.

Apparently one left-wing instance has already defederated from the BBC for being a transphobic organisation though

flamingmongoose,

Mastodon.art has always defedded very quickly

Jackthelad,

How on Earth is the BBC “transphobic”?

Although I suppose some of these hardcore activist types think everything is.

HipPriest,

I've yet to see any of them give any evidence apart from an article published on the BBC Nottingham website which relied on data which is apparently a biased source of something.

Which isn't particularly compelling enough to call the whole BBC a transphobic organisation. But I'll admit it's not exactly my specialist field

What I do know is the Beeb always gets shit from the right for being 'too loony left/woke' and shit from the left for being 'too establishment/not representative of anyone apart from wealthy white men'. It's meant to be unbiased so of course everyone accuses it of bias whenever they can. I think they just try and rise above it

Borkingheck,

Bbc is both a brexiteer and a remainer, left and right wing but most definitely against Scottish indy haha.

HipPriest,

As a half Scot I both agree and disagree :P

Transcendant, in BBC Launches A Mastodon Instance - fediverse - Project Segfault Kbin

Not much to say about this new instance other than I think it’s a good move… but Very_Bad_Janet? As someone who was extremely into Bad Janet, I’m not sure I can handle the concept of Very Bad Janet.

And if by some chance your username isn’t a ‘The Good Place’ reference, then I imagine you’re confused right now.

Very_Bad_Janet,

What up, forknut? ;)

HipPriest, in What do you call this?

First one (rhymes with Mars) for me as well.

I've never heard a British person say vase to rhyme with face. Have you considered your other half is a spy and their cover is blown?

HubertManne,
HubertManne avatar

this sounds wierd to me. I have heard vaz that does not really rhyme well with anything but is close to cause from because or like saws or laws. Never as something that rymes with mars or cars though. And the vase as in face type I have heard to.

HipPriest,

Wow I've not heard that one... You've found the third way!

I swear its been used that way in movies but usually with a hoity toity older woman rich person type.
