Varyk,

Prageru is strictly a propagandist conservative YouTube channel, with no connection to formal education at all(until now, I guess). Is that right?

krolden,
@krolden@lemmy.ml avatar

Of all the actually educational content on YouTube, this is what they pick.

Varyk,

It is bizarre, it’s like trying to decide on a new car and finally choosing an opened bag of moldy potato chips instead.

mPony,

When asked which flavour of potato chips they enjoyed, they replied that they enjoyed damaging peoples' lives the most. When informed that wasn't actually a flavour of potato chip, they screamed and started punching the camera.
Now here's Dave with the sports.

Nalivai,

Yeah, but the chips are named “Jack C (c stands for car, trust me)”, and that’s basically the same thing

adroidBalloon,

correct. this move by Florida is terrifying

keeb420,

and yet they project the left is indoctrinating kids.

Sharpiemarker,

Projection. Every accusation is a confession.

PoliticalAgitator,

How ELSE do you explain how my SON went off to COLLEGE where he was no longer DEPENDANT on ME and came back without any of my HOMOPHOBIA.

PostmodernPythia,

On another thread, a guy literally tried to defend this by saying “kids constantly get left-wing indocrination.” Are right wing nuts actually unaware how unbalanced the US right and left are in terms of extremism? They can’t really believe what they’re saying, right?

adroidBalloon,

every accusation is a confession

stempo,

This is horrifying. This is fascism. Teach them an alternate reality from birth. Gotta make sure those white kids keep feeling special. Gotta make sure the black kids know they were better off enslaved. Perfect. Our country is soooooo fucked.

OceanSoap,

To be fair, there’s alternate history that was being taught in schools prior to this (I haven’t looked into the prageru program, so I’m not sure what they teach that’s alt history yet). But the 1619 project is a good example of alternate history that was/is being pushed and taught at schools.

PostmodernPythia,

Ah yes, well-researched history about topics that make white conservatives uncomfortable. That “alternate history”? What do you think is false in the 1619 project? I’m curious.

OceanSoap,

I’m not conservative.

The premise that America started as a country when the first slaves landed in 1619 is false.

PostmodernPythia,

When do you think America (as a country, not a nation-state) started? And what makes yours more factual than the 1619 narrative?

OceanSoap,

1776 is when America started. In 1619 there was no America the country, it was brittish colonies. 1619 wasn’t even the first African slaves to step foot on the North American continent, they were just the first to arrive to one specific colony in Verginia.

PostmodernPythia,

I see. This is the level of understanding we’re dealing with.

I know all that. That’s why a said as a country, not a nation-state; to differentiate between national culture and government It was the nation-state that started in 1789. I’m not wasting any more time arguing with you. It’s clear we won’t understand each other.

rephlekt2718,
rephlekt2718 avatar

Is the 1619 project alternate history?

vaultdweler13,

Yes it was co-authored by Harry Turtledove /s

Rumblestiltskin,

Where is it being taught in school? I think Trump and DeSantis banning it being taught in school is just a publicity stunt claiming the woke left is rewriting history.

Didros,

Alternative history is taught all the time everywhere. I was shocked when I worked in a school to hear the teacher telling kids about Columbus “discovering” America. When in reality he was put on a pedestal in response to anger against Italian immigrants. They needed a national hero to be treated better. You know, because they were not white.

…maybe there is a connection point of everything we don’t teach…

Rumblestiltskin,

I am sure incorrect history is being taught in many places but I was talking about the 1619 project being taught in schools. It just seems like a manufactured political outrage.

Didros,

Ah, I don’t know the project and assumed it was a group collecting wrong history taught in schools. Understand now. :)

some_guy,

This was eye-opening (as a product of American schooling).

Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong

Didros,

I would recommend the pod casts:
The Dollop: if you can take a joke about history you will enjoy the gross tales of America’s history.

Stuff You Missed in History Class: a much more sanitized look at all of history with a bit of feminism thrown in.

GammaGames,

I do agree with you about alternate history in general, and PregerU is straight conservative misinformation

ashok36,

The end goal is to have a completely separate educational system free from federal overview.

“Pretty soon people won’t accept Florida university degrees.”

That’s missing the point. New York and California may not accept them but Texas and Alabama will. These cretins need a way to keep their kids from running away to “liberal shit holes” so they’re going to keep them ignorant and useless for anything more than basic factory and warehouse work.

Long term planning? Competing with emerging powers? Who has time for that? They expect the world to end any day now. Fuck it.

dudinax,

“Long term planning? Competing with emerging powers?” It’s worse than that. They’ve forgotten that these are things people can do.

kent_eh,

It’s like thwy saw Idiocracy and decided that should be their goal.

Burn_The_Right,

Conservatism is metastacizing in the U.S. Historically, such unchecked conservatism has not been cured by pacifism. Aggressive work will be needed to extinguish this deadly plague.

“In a video message, an “ecstatic” PragerU CEO Marissa Streit announced the “move into schools,” claiming “parents have been frustrated, teachers have been frustrated,” because “schools have been hijacked by the left”

Assuming there’s any truth at all to it, why is the go-to solution to schools being hijacked by the left for them to now be hijacked by the right?

PostmodernPythia,

I want my IWW-sponsored curriculum! If we have to deal with this shit, it should at least be real.

dan1101,
@dan1101@lemmy.world avatar

I think many schools are left leaning. Two effects of that are tolerance and inclusion, which I am certainly in favor of even if I don’t like every liberal policy.

PostmodernPythia,

Let’s say there’s a spectrum, left to center to right, and there are a hundred political positions evenly distributed between the center and each extreme. I’m willing to accept that schools are 10 places over to the left, because “treat all people equitably” is both a left value and a necessary part of living in a free society. But this response is to pick a position maybe seventy slots over onn the right, and pretend that’s equivalent to the “left propaganda” of “Billy has two mommies, and that’s ok.”

MiloSquirrel,

They’re left leaning in the sense that education as a whole is ‘left leaning’. It’s why the right fucking haaate people getting an education, because it helps you see through obviously bullshit

Vlhacs,

Because it’s parent’s rights to enforce certain learnings UNLESS it’s progressive teachings apparently.

Valdair,
Valdair avatar

By trying to present themselves as the center instead of the far-right, they slowly move people’s’ conception of what the “center” is further and further right. It’s been happening for decades.

They should just close the schools and tell kids to do their own research, cons love that shit.

Arbiter,

Just close Florida at this point.

Turn it into a giant national park that people aren’t allowed to live in.

taylus,

people aren’t allowed to live in

global warming will take care of that soon

they can’t even get insurance anymore, just wait for the hurricanes in a few months

jzzvid,
@jzzvid@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

We’re in an El Niño year, so we probably won’t see a lot of hurricanes despite the record high ocean temperatures. There’s too much wind sheer coming off continental high pressure systems residing over the Eastern US that tends to cause tropical circulations to either fall apart or curve towards Central America or the central Atlantic. Give is a couple years once we are our of the current cycle.

Instead Florida will just bake in record high temps and probably experience some really severe storms caused by the same convection currents that cause sea breezes. These are known for spawning tornadoes, so there still is a possibility for severe weather. Just probably not hurricanes.

We’ll see tho. Hurricane season don’t usually get busy until the end of August through October with a peak in September and this year has been very unprecedented. Who even knows at this point?

hh93,

That’s probably the plan down the road

Make public schools as unpopular as possible so that’s it’s easier to defund them more and more…

MiloSquirrel,

That’s been Oklahoma’s gameplan. Make public schools as shitty/underfunded as possible so they can get kids into private schools

TwoGems,

Fhek,

Floridumb.

HeavenAndHell,

Lol Dennis Prager is one of the dumbest idiots out there. I can’t believe he shared a platform with Hitchens at one point.

gravitas_deficiency,

Jesus fuck, really? DeSantis and his pet legislators are going to do generational amounts of damage to Florida.

DannyMac,
@DannyMac@lemmy.world avatar

Yup, Republicans need dumb breeders to prop their party up. They’re banning critical thinking.

arefx,

And the United States.

masquenox,

which has taken a sharp conservative turn

Wht the fuck do they still call these fascists “conservative”?

arefx,

They mean the same thing now.

14specks,
@14specks@lemmy.ml avatar

always_have_been_astronaut.jpg

murky_man,

They really don’t. Words have meanings and the US is not the only country in the world. Other countries still have actual conservative parties. The GOP used to be a conservative party but really should not be called conservative any more. It is a right wing populist party with a shrinking centrist wing (that still has some old school conservatives in it) and a growing right wing extremist wing (which has actual fascists in it).

echodot,

It seems to be a standard at the moment. Look at the UK conservatives. Their policies and rhetoric of become increasingly fascist over the last 15 years. But boy do they blow a fuse if you point it out.

The big difference being they don’t have a big dedicated voter base.
It’s where does it in the US they do have one.

arefx,

Well of course I’m only speaking for the United States of America, my country, and not other countries in which I’ve never even been and can’t speak for.

PostmodernPythia,

American English is distinct from other English, so our vocabulary has no bearing on the rest of the world, but you can also get your linguistic prescriptivism out of our dialect. Language (and the meanings of words) are co-created by speakers. Ask any reputable linguist. And in American English, for political and cultural reasons, the meanings of “conservative” and “fascist” have converged in many ways.

aDuckk,

Because conservatives don’t get to wash their hands of all the evil they’ve done and supported whenever it looks bad on them.

CanadaPlus,

Because that’s a scary word and using it would mean history can get them.

Really. They would say it’s “polarising” or “not constructive” or something, but that’s their way of saying “scary to the people in the conversation”. I’m honestly not sure what it will take to burst the imaginary bubble these guys live in.

BarrelAgedBoredom,

Oh God someone please get me the fuck out of Florida

krolden,
@krolden@lemmy.ml avatar

Just pull yourself up by your bootstraps and do some insider trading.

arefx,

Lots of nice cities in New York state if you ever are in a position to move. Beautiful places with nature too. Plus a lot of new yorkers retire to Florida so it’s like the opposite

BarrelAgedBoredom,

I’m actually looking at your neighbor to the east! CT seems to be a bit cheaper and a better fit. However I’m open to suggestions for affordable places that would be welcoming to my pinko commie ass

StantonVitales,

Yea but 90% of everything above Orange County is intensely conservative.

Albany and Saratoga are fine, a few spots here and there are ok, maybe Ithaca and other bigger areas, but legit the entire reason I left Fulton/Montgomery (besides the rampant meth abuse and constant threat of violence) was so I could raise my kid in a place not dominated by rebel flags and red white and blue truck balls.

DharkStare,

Florida really needs to stop tipping itself with how bad it can be. It seems like Florida is rapidly getting worse with each new headline I read

amanneedsamaid,

Didros,

My point is we won’t even make an attempt to stop it.
