More than a million people have entered Macao for Chinese New Year so far

By the end of yesterday, Macao had recorded more than a million visitor arrivals across the ongoing Lunar New Year holiday, the Macau Post Daily reports.

The first five days of the holidays – between Saturday and Wednesday – saw almost 900,000 visitors enter the SAR, according to Macao Government Tourism Office figures. On Thursday, day six of the Lunar New Year, Public Security Police data showed about 177,000 visitors arrived.

That’s a total in excess of 1.07 million so far, equating to a daily average of about 178,000.

From the article:

Arrivals from the Chinese mainland made up about 76 percent of the total, while those from Hong Kong made up about 18 percent.

Last year’s Lunar New Year holiday drew an average of 64,400 daily arrivals – a muted inflow as the city emerged from three years of Covid-19 restrictions.

In 2019, before the pandemic decimated tourism, the holiday saw a daily average of just under 180,000 arrivals.
