There are a lot of consequences to playing hardcore that level the playing field. For one thing, the time investment is normalized. People can't just throw attempts at content to clear it, there are permanent consequences for failure. AoE mage farming is possible, but the one time you trip over a log when you blink and get overwhelmed by mobs means losing everything on that character and starting over. Only have 30 minutes a day to play? It adds up, and getting to 60 at your own pace is the only thing that matters. Hardcore is possibly the healthiest version of WoW there's ever been.
